The anglers net regulars....

I have noticed of late that there seems to be a plethora of threads started by new members including some really basic questions that have previously been answered time and time again. There doesn't seem to be the deeper discussions and idea sharing that I remember of old.

Definitely.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

All,

""...basic questions that have previously been answered time and time again""

Isn't that what angling is about. VERY rarely do I see many basic complexities come about from session to session whilst fishing.

I used to think the same thing - geeez! same old questions! But you know what? Every now and again a "new" answer pops up either intentionally or by accident. Frankly, if more would participate in the "newbie" questions with the "answer" and then some thoughts on their basic notion of fishing in general it becomes both nostalgic and fun.

What I do notice, especially by "the accomplished" is that they never want to "go out on a limb for fear the critics begin. No one seems to be willing to be challanged. It almost always becomes "personal". To bad really. I don't know how many ways there are to skin a cat but what ever that number is you can double it for ways to catch a fish. Fundamentally, fish are stupid.

Perhaps members should be ruder to newcomers; that might discourage 'em!

Seriously though, this is a friendly forum and I would guess it's a compliment that new members feel uninhibited enough to start threads and join discussions. It's inevitable that the members of a forum will differ widely in their level of experience. What is important, IMHO, is that all members receive equal treatment regardless of their perceived level of seniority.

It's an old saying, but we all had to start somewhere.

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."

Listening to a rock band or 2 as I do one has had 2 very good and probably old sayings at the start of a loud and raucous tracks.

"Its nice to be important but its important to be nice."

"You have to get what you like or you will have to like what you get."

Both very true of angling and this forum

The 2nd one I can do and the first one I am working on :D .

I sort of like the same old questions coming up. It means that there are new people about who don't want to trawl, they just ask.

I like the uber clique discussions on the merits of different approaches to this or that - a great resource that often reveals how specialists arrived at their approaches in a way that can be adapted to otther species or situations.

I also sort of enjoy what our American (with a Geordie accent) friends might describe as "Shooting the shite" and talking nonsense or presenting a slightly caricatured version of my thoughts on the NFC section.

The thing is that whilever people post really basic forum questions rather than research their query on the web or ask a real rather than a virtual angler, forums tend to become boring and repetetive. This results in regular members becoming disinterested and leaving, leading to a general deterioration of the forum as a whole. There are too many people who don't seem to be able to find their own way in life. They want someone else to fill in their benefit claims forms, council house applications, etc, etc.

Also, I bet if you researched this you would find that a lot of newcomers leave or stop posting after a few weeks only to be replaced by others asking basically the same questions.

Regards, Clive

Well, of the 27 threads on the fist page of the "Coarse fishing" section (as I type), only three are from members with less than 20 posts - I can live with that !
