Prawn Nets - any tips?

Lauren C

Recommended Posts

Hello there, I'm Lauren. I have just started taking an interest in beach fishing. My husband has fished the Bristol Channel for over 20 years and I'm keen to start myself too! My cast is slightly lame, maybe 50ft at best so I have bought a prawn net so I can get involved when hes fishing :P

I have recently bought a prawn net, does anyone have any tips on bait? I have some frozen squid already but I was wondering if I could use anything else? Thanks in advance :D

Hi Lauren and welcome to Anglers' Net.

I'll move this to the sea fishing section so more people will see it and give you suggestions.

That was my doing. It is most odd for a topic to not get content-specific & helpful replies and I wondered if a title that pertained to the content might help. It didn't which makes me think no one looking at the topic had any information to share.

I wouldn't know a prawn net if one bit me on the ankle so I couldn't help and I felt sorta bad that no one seemed able to.

It really wasn't a jobsworth action but I can see how it might have seemed like one. :o

If it's about fishing rods, reels end gear etc, talk for england, prawn nets and bait, do you mean pots or traps using bait?

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

you can put any old thing in a prawn trap the smelly the better ,if you get a taste for them and your hubby frequents sandy beaches a push net may bring more dividends

this sort of thing but if you buy a cheap one you may snap the cross bar so probably a bit of reinforcement needed or build your own

Not sure what nets you mean, traps or hand nets? If the tide is out and its rocky where you are fishing you can use ametal framed hand net to run the net throgh the sea weed around the rocks and under ledges etc. f you are fihing from a quay or near deep water the traps might work better.

I have a rectangle (umbrella?) net? I bought from my local bait shop. Basically. its just a metal frame with a net tied on followed with a long hand held line. This is the only pic I have found of it on google http://www.china-outdoors.com/products.asp...20Net&cid=2

I used it last night as I was massively curious as to how it would work, I used dog fish guts tied in some old stockings and it did the trick! I left it down for about 20-30 mins and pulled it up with some help from hubby, inside sat 3 prawns (species I dont know) and 2 crabs.

Now I im not sure if this is normal or not thsi time of year but I was pleased with that outcome considering I didnt have a clue how or what to do! On the down side, a few anglers were quite rude and mocking me :o ... To which I replied "considering Im 8 months pregnant and its high tide, BC surge and Im completely clueless Im not doing bad!" They soon stopped gawping at me LOL B)

Well done to catch. As to the others, those sound like louts who were carrying fishing rods rather than decent anglers and another well done for telling them off.
