Can I catch a tench on a hair-rigged twig?

What do you reckon?

 

I'm doing a bit of tench fishing this weekend, and these days I pretty much exclusively use fake corn/caster/maggots as bait. So why should they be any more or less effective than a bit of twig?

 

The water is very clear and conditions not too bad; with normal baits I'd expect a few bites.

 

Do you think I'll catch, or will this result in failure? Is the success of fake baits simply that they are taken unintentionally over a baited area, or does it matter that they are made to look like food?

 

Hopefully it'll be interesting either way...and if it works I'll get photographic proof!

I think it might depend on how buoyant the twig is but even if it is fairly heavy the way Tench feed should give you chance. If they are hoovering up bait I see no reason why they would not suck up bits of detris with food items and then expel what they don't want. Should work shouldn't it?

 

It might be a very clever idea to not make your bait look like bait, it sounds like a very interesting idea.

Still don't have total confidence in fake baits so I think you will have to mix your twig with a bit of real twig.LOL

 

I use fake maggots and corn with the real thing lots.

 

Headless has just purchased an underwater camera jobby that we are going to experiment with to observe tench feeding on a tricky water we fish.I think it will be interesting to see if they do pick up and mouth lots of things other than food.

 

I rather suspect they do so I think in a properly tight baited area you will catch.

 

However twig would still not be my number one tench bait.

I have always believed maggots are best for tench, but nothing is said about artificials, cant wait for they results of your day. So please post results & thoughts soon as you can.

Are you going to post what you record, re- the tench? Would be great to see what they get up to, as soon have a lake opening that is just tench & carp.

Fishing is the most peaceful & solitary group activity a going. Every watewr is different every day, thanks for that as same would be boring....

I caught carp on bare hooks over hemp so dont see why not at all/I think it would be a great experiment to fish like you normally would but have one hook just balanced but no bait or bait looking thing on it! It would certainly go a long way to answering the "are fake baits picked up intentionally or just by mistake question".

 

When I was carping with my "bare" hook rigs over big beds of hemp I'm 95% sure the only purpose the beads and poly balls (other than critically balancing the hook) served was to boost my confidence! I'm sure as Rod Hutchinson first suggested the hook would have just been sucked in regardless.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Dr Kappa you nead to leaf it out as I think you are going out on a bit of a limb by barking up that tree! Trying to jump on Anderoo's great idea instead of boughing down to his greater thirst for knowledge! leaf him alone as after all its from little acorns that mighty oak tree's grow so you shouldnt try to nip this in the bud............... :rolleyes:
