"However owners of the cars will still be obliged to ensure their cars are in a roadworthy condition," Mr Penning added.

Excuse me if I'm being naive, but I thought that was the function of the MOT test. I don't think that 30 quid a year is a lot to attempt to ensure the safety of the rest of us - there'll always be someone happy to run a rusty old banger to get out of paying for service costs.

Your being naive or you have never read your VT20.The MOT Test does not confirm road-worthiness of a vehicle. It says so on the front of the VT20.
Warning:A test certificate is not evidence that the vehicle is in a satisfactory condition.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I think the subtext of that warning is "so don't come crying to us if the head gasket's gone" - the MOT is a superficial test of compliance with safety and emissions requirements, so at least to that extent it is a (cursory) test of roadworthiness.

Nevertheless, it ensures that the brakes and suspension work as they should and that the car is properly shod; the lights and wipers function properly; and that the engine isn't chucking out more poisons than permitted. In that sense, it's a test of roadworthiness despite the disclaimer (there are disclaimers on almost everything these days, it seems).

i can see hidden and easily overlooked (accidentally or not) rust problems happen and in places that are checked in the MOT these are very important and certainly shouldnt be overlooked ,you can check if your brakes are working ,you can check if your steerings ok but under extreme circumstances rust on their support areas are a killer for the driver and in a lot of cases pedestrians

BUT, this is ONLY as good as the man checking the points in consideration and only as long as the vehicle does not move. I.E. As soon as you drive out onto the road it is not worth the paper it is written on! So why should it not be possible to run an old "BANGER" at least it is more likely to be roadworthy due to the people who look after these cars than MR AVERAGE!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

No slur on classic car users, Chris. I was referring to the type of turd that endangers us all.

IMHO I would rather they had some sort of MOT as what is likely to happen is that if they are involved in an accident, they will have a fight on their hands, as suspicion will fall on the "unchecked" car.
