Elton you will just have to wait another year B) B)

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

But it's not really his name is it.

I hear he's called Ken Thorpe. Used to be heavily involved in a fishing club down South.

No idea why he moved up north and changed his name. Maybe it was to do with being on the radio. Like Cliff Richard. Two first names sound better. Elton John!

And I hear he's threatened people with legal action in the past when mention has been made of his "earlier incarnation". :whistling:

This is hardly very likely as he documents his life in the south growing up and his move north in his auto biography, available for all to read (not very secret is it !!) I have met Martin on a number of occasions and have always found him extremely pleasant and interesting to listen to. He has always been ready to offer assistance and advice on any fishing problems and has probably caught more big chub than any one else alive or dead, I bought his book At the waters edge last year and it is a brilliant read 300+ pages of fishing tales and advice for all types of fishing from all over the world.

Unsurprisingly, people do not necessarily want to reveal everything about themselves when writing their autobiographies. Nobody on here is claiming him to be anything other than a splendid chap who has done much good work for charity.

His change of name, however, is documented in, amongst other sources, the Kevin Clifford book "A History of Carp Fishing - Revisited". Very hard to spot, though, as it appears in a footnote and the book has no index!

P.S Anyone else think it's odd that two new members have registered and posted apparently in response to this thread?

I remember articles (good ones) by Ken Thorpe on chub fishing. I seem to remember meeting him somewhere (probably at an angling show) Had a vague idea (I may be wrong) he was connected to the angling press.

I also remember tackle manufacturers "Martin James of Redditch" and had assumed the modern Martin James to be a descendant of the founder.
