Stupid, Adrift and Thanking God for a Coleman Cooler

As Newt knows (he and Jan fished with me once), I live in Michigan and fish Lake Michigan for salmon and trout quite regularly in a 16' lund. It's essentially a large freshwater sea which is littered with the wrecks of a lot of boats and ships, because it can get pretty hairy at times. There's even an airliner out there somewhere which went down in 1950, they never did find it.

Anyhow, the point I'm trying to make is that if you have a boat it's better to err on the side of caution when you go fishing or boating, even if conditions seem favorable. Four days ago an acquaintance of mine, Dave Mull, who edits Great Lakes Angler Magazine, was trolling in an 18' Lake Assault several miles offshore when a series of misjudgments led to its capsize and rapid sinking. Dave spent three hours drifting with a beverage cooler while his three companions - two men and a ten year-old boy, spent four. Only the boy was wearing a life preserver.

I think they were pretty fortunate to survive, even though it was a bright, sunny day with minimal waves. You may read Dave's blog about the experience HERE (Stupid, Adrift and Thanking God for a Coleman Cooler).

Very lucky and very dumb.

Didn't have life jackets or PFDs, could easily have got tangled up and taken down with the boat and has out of date flares in a non floating container that he had no idea how to use.

Not only that but he is disrespectful of his country's servicemen and women who are "Atheists in Foxholes".

It's strange that those religious type thank their deity for getting them out of the faeces, but never cuss him for getting them in the mess in the first place.

Could it be that most of us fully realize that we get ourselves into the mess without needing any divine (or any other sort of) help?

Looks like ths thread has been hijacked.

Not really. Not only was it your mate who mixed theology with his fishing/boating story, he also used that theology to undermine a section of his society.

Had he simply said, "I thanked god for our survival", I for one might have just let the inconsistency slide, but using the situation he found himself in to assert that people in difficult situations reach out to the god that they are supposed to suddenly believe in even if they are normally atheists.....No, you don't get to do that any more.

Especially when the non-believers are servicemen, defending your right to spout such rubbish in the first place.

I was absolutely gob-smacked to learn that this guy was an Editor of an angling magazine specialising in fishing the Great Lakes.

On that basis, we should appoint Mr Bean as Minister for Health and Safety

Accidents can happen to anyone, but the amount of negligence and incompetence shown here beggars belief.

Thank Random Chance that there were no fatalities, despite the adult participants stacking the odds against it.

It does indeed beggar belief. If there was a God, he'd have held his head under and done the world a favour. One w@nker less to feed. Edited by corydoras
