routers

Recommended Posts

i have connected inside of the master socket. i need to sort out a different lead if i do away with the filter, i have one and will give it a go, no i don't know how to check the sync speed. off ru@@dy fishing agiain in the morning, please be patient with us. :)

bt's test was between 1-3 they said the average would more than likely be 1.

ok lets see if we cant let you figure out how to access your router:

depending on windows version: either

XP= press START>RUN type CMD press RETURN

Vista/WIN 7= press start>type CMD into search box and press RETURN

this will bring up a command window: black with white writing; like an old dos window

click in the new windows and type "ipconfig" without the quotes

this will list your IP adresses for all your network cards on the given pc

one of the numbers listed will be DEFAULT GATEWAY

this is the IP address of your ROUTER

make a note of it and close down the command window

now open up your chosen BROWSER and in the address bad type in the IP address of the router and press RETURN.

if all is well this will open up the web interface of your ROUTER!

NOTE: in most cases ROUTERS are set to a given default value out of the factory...its usually 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1...in recent times NETGEAR and BT have changed values to 192.168.0.254 or similar. your computers IP ADDRESS will be set along the same value: ie: 192.168.0.2 etc

normally the instruction for any new router will give you the default IP address for you to access them during installation...but if your like alot of other people then chances are your router came direct from the ISP and was set-up already and all you had to do was plug it in! so you might not know the IP ADDRESS of it....

if you do...ignore all the above appart from typing the address into your browser! if you dont then youve just learned something and you now know how to find it out for yourself! :)

regardless: with luck when you type ther IP address into your browser you will open up the Router web interface:

cant recall if youve posted your router make/model but they are all pretty much the same anyway.

you will open and page that will usually ask for a username and password: if you havnt changed it it will be the factory defaults which you can hunt down online: for Netgears its usualy admin/admin or admin/password...none of them are particularly taxing at their defaults! (NOTE: for anyone here: if youve never changed your routers admin password DO SO NOW!! hacking a default router once you know the IP address is childsplay! on top of your WIRELSS SECURITY KEY its the next step in stopping unwanted people on your network!!)

anyway with the security stuff put in you should get access to all the juicy bits of your router!

dont fiddle too much...check the menus for an options like STATISTICS or CONNECTION or even STATUS:

dg834n_v10208.gif

hopefully you will find a page looking similar to the one above (which is for a netgear router)

your looking for the SYNC speed of your connection. the SYNC speed is the speed of connection between your router and the exchange. its usually listed in KBPS....divide by 1000 for the rough MEG value of the speed...

for instance my SYNC speed is 6400 ish...so a speed of 6.4 meg a second....in real terms you can usually drop .5 meg off that rate for your actual download speed...which gives you the result you see on internet speedtests.

in the above piccy its called DOWNSTREAM CONNECTION

now with the SYNC information you can figure out a couple of things:

if your SYNC speed is decent but your download speeds are crappy then something is eating your bandwidtth on your systems somewhere or your IP Profile might be stuck giving a throughput limitation which will eventually hit your SYNC speed.

if your SYNC speed is low and closer to the speed your reporting then your phone line simply isnt connecting at a decent rate at all.

in the 2nd instance you have a few choices: call your ISP and report an issue with your phone line...if ISP is BT then dont bother phoning their internet support; just call their landline fault number (150 i think) and tell them your phone is making horrible crackling noises and youve tested another handset and its still doing it. DONT mention slow internet; just stick to a crappy phone line story. this will raise an issue for a BT engineer to check after the operator has run some tests to see if your line has a fault.

if your not with BT then you need to call your ISP and tell them you have run tests via the BT test socket and your speed is awful. the first thing they will do is ask you to run thw BT SPEEDTESTER test...which will give you an IP Profile. this really is vital info to have.....

basically your IP Profile is set via the exchange after a "training" period of 72 hours...the exchange will connect and disconnect your broadband until it finds a stable speed which will hold a steady connection. this then sets the upper limit of your broadband speed. its goes as low as 128k....various things will causes the exchange to lower your IP Profile. more than 3 drop-outs in a given hour will tend to set a "watch" state on your profile..further disconnects will cause IP profile drops. long periods of disconnection will cause a drop. errors on the phone line will cause a drop. etc

once your IP profile drops it takes a full 72 hours of uninterupted connection for it to begin to re-train itself.

so for instance; if like some of my older clients your in the habit of unplugging all things before you go to bed, then your buggering up your broadband connection by doing so...in order to gain a good speed your router needs to be on 24/7!!

NOTE: your SYNC speed can read high but your IP Profile might not have changed to match it! so you might be SYNCED at 5500 KBPS but your IP profile might have dropped to 256k so your download speed will be throttled until your IP profile picks up again! 72 hours later!!

this is normally what happens in the even of an internal fault, or a line fault. once it is fixed the SYNC speed instantly rises but the IP Profile takes 72 hours to change so you notice the benefits!

its alot of info to gather...but in the end you will have everything you need to figure out whats up with your line; if anything. BT speed estimates are usually on the conservative side....given your local exchange and your closeness to it i would think you should easily be expecting 2+ meg!

finally it is actually possible for your ISP to have set a profile speed on your account. Plusnet do so and occasionally they also forget to reset your profile if your IP Profile changes....so everything might be nippy at the exchange and at your router but the ISP hasnt upped your speed throughput at their end! again a call to your ISP can check this out.

in short its no easy answer...but hopefully this info might get you a bit closer to finding out if its a fault or if your just unlucky with your speed!

most excellant, thank you, i will have a read and a play this evening and let you know how i get on.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..
