I've got one or two smaller ones that I use for perch, and they are good lures, but similar to Mepps - though the Mepps are lighter for a given size, which tends to decide which I use. eg if it's shallow I'd tend to use Mepps.

But I must admit I've never used the bigger ones for pike. What sort of venue has it been where you've used them?

The lure size has not made much difference and I have had Pike on the very small ones. They seem to work well on all venues both rivers and still waters but I have found them the most effective in clearish water conditions. However I have caught in murky water aswell. I used to think it was the red wool that made them so effective and tried adding wool to other lures including Mepps but it never seemed to dramatically improve the catching rate on other lures.

I have never been able to work out why they seem so effective and I am also a big fan of Mepps, maybe it is because I have used these lures for so long I just know how to work them well.

its probably just that Dales, im a big fan of the Abu jointed terminator but i wouldnt call it my favorite lure having only caught 1 pike and hooked and lost a couple but you bet if i gave that lure to Andy Macfarlane he would well out fish me on it (as he has done....).

Good, but if anything a bit light which does'nt help casting distance. I have modified a couple of them with SSG shot, or with a 'just out of the box' one put a couple of shot on the trace. As someone has said, shallow water seems to be best, I have tried them on a downrigger and with weighted trolling stems, however bigger spoons like the Kuusmann professor and the large Masterlinr toothy critter outfish them especially below 40 feet.

But Elton seems to be saying something amazing. He lure fished extensively for 2 years, and often presumably used the Rublex Ondex - maybe 60 times over the 2 years? And it NEVER let him down ie he always caught on it. 60 (say) out of 60!

Am I understanding you right, Elton? If so it's really amazing.

Done quite well myself on inline spinners but if I had to choose just one lure, it'd be a 3" Kopyto in white on a 5g Jighead.

However, I use them a LOT so I know how to fish them and I think that's the crux of the matter. Plus it'll probably only work on the waters I fish too...

The search continues

Tench,

We can all answer that question. NO, that's not what he's saying.

That would leave it as the only lure on the market. When an angler says, "it never let me down" the general understanding among anglers is that they have as much or more confidence in (whatever is in question) to be less disappointed in "X". I.e. more confident.

No angling method or device is fullproof.

I remember reading advice donkey's years ago in one of the angling weeklies that the wool on the Ondex should be closely trimmed, or the hooks would rust due to retained moisture. Anyone ever found that to be the case? I imagine the more recent incarnations of the Ondex have stainless hooks anyway?
