My PC is currently running Windows7 64bit

I would like to try Ubuntu to see how it compares.

What is the best way to run it on the PC without affecting my stuff on Windows 7

Thanks

im sure you can get a "Live CD" version of it. it doesnt alter anything on your system as its running from the dvd :)

it will be available as a bootable iso which you can burn to a dvd with the likes of imgburn. once burned you can put the dvd in your pc and restart and if all goes well it should give you the option to boot from the dvd. if not you may need to alter the boot order in your bios putting the dvd drive as the first boot device (remember what the original order is so that if you need to revert)

problem is you cant make changes to the system on a live cd or keep files stored on the desktop as it runs from the dvd but you should be able to save any files downloaded or documents to a hard drive. if you want to go back to windows eject the dvd and reboot, simples.

with other live cd's ive used they also have an option to install it to your hard drive if you want to use it permenantly.

Thanks Andy

I would like to try it but I need to keep windows as I do all my work on Serif products and they don't function on Linux.

well you can use the live cd for the time being to try it. it doesn't interfere with windows or anything at all. just eject cd and all is good.

if you do decide you want ubuntu after trying the live cd you can partition your hard drive or install a second one and dual boot meaning you are presented with the choice of launching windows or linux.

not for computer novices though, configuring a pc to dual boot windows and linux might be a bit of a daunting task. if in doubt best asking someone who knows so you dont screw up your windows boot.

My question is why?

Ubuntu won't be givin you more functionality, better software or even a significantly faster pc overall. Sure it will boot faster but beyond that you won't see much difference, if any.

For curiosity do as Andy says and try a live boot cd...

If you really want a laugh download the windows 8 trial and dual boot to that! You'll be in for a shock or two! Lol!
