Report from Ukraine

I have no idea what does it mean

And google doesn't help :(

Can you explaine for me?

I'm leave in Ukraine and English is not so easy for me.

Thanks.

I'm sorry if my remark confused you, as Newt says it's just an expression meaning 'be prepared for some verbal abuse'. I'm glad to see that you haven't recieved any.

There was a time on here when a photograph of a fish lying on a wooden platform, or even on grass, would have had some people telling you that you are doing it wrong. Even using a keepnet (and I do), is wrong in their eyes.

The anglers of the UK are a strange bunch. I've been fishing for over 50years, and I don't fully understand them. :D

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

A "tin hat" was the WWI soldier's helmet and was also used as protective headgear for construction workers.

As used here it is an expression that loosely means, "Watch for verbal rocks thrown at you".

UK anglers treat their fish with great care because they have too little fresh water for the number of anglers and taking fish for eating or not being careful to release them unharmed would quickly deplete their fish stocks. Almost all fishing is mandatory catch & release with the fish put on a padded rubber mat for unhooking and gently returned to the water after taking a photograph or weighing the fish if it is large.

They are happy to eat sea fish and fresh water trout but eating other species will usually bring a loud outcry.

I'm from the United States where fishing and fish handling is much more similar to yours and was verbally blasted a couple of times before I learned the local customs. Unfortunately, some of our members are convinced that their way (which is right for their conditions) should be used everywhere.

This is a great site and if you have to ignore an occasional rude remark, it is worth it for the information you can give and get.

Thank you for explanation!

Here in Ukraine we have the amount of ponds with sport approach (where you must to release fish) that we can count on fingers of one hand. Specialy in my region.

Why? Because at most of the fishing places owners grow fish like livestock. They just are feeding fish (mostly common carp, silver carp and crucian) and after 2 or 3 years take all fish from pond. Nay, they use fishing nets at their ponds all time!

And in this situation why we shall release a fish at such places?

But last few years many anglers distribute a vision of "catch and release" philosophy.

Well, it is hard to explane all situation in few words :)

I hope my future fishing reports give you clearer vision.

When put that way it does make perfect sense, no one bats an eyelid over here about keeping stocked Rainbow Trout as they are "farmed". I look forward to reading more of your reports.

I was interested that you listed Semolina as bait, is this in the groundbait only? Or is is used on the hook some how as a paste, dough or do you fish it as a grain on very small hooks?

Also love the bells, I take a set on holiday with me where ever I go. Quality bite alarms

Stephen

We use semoline like a paste

It is one of a favorite bait here, in Ukraine, for the crucian. Hook №14-12 not small as for me.

Here is example of usage with syringe, but in most of cases we use just a wooden stick :)

Semolina must be liquid.

We call this bait something like English word "stir" but as a noun.

1. If you prepared this bait in right way, it will stay on hook for long time. 15 minutes is minimum

2. Take semolina and invite the same amount of water. Wait 10 minutes and begin to stir. You have to stir very extensively for 15 minutes, that is not easy. But long time of stiring is only one way to make perfect bait from semolina :)

As I said before it is one of the best bait for crucian and carp here, in Ukraine. When nibble absent this bait can help out you. If even semoline doesn't work — go home :)
