Welcome to Anglers' Net, Stalln

Some of us here are always interested in fish caught in other countries.

Which part of the Ukraine is the River Styr in ?

Looked at your blog, and some interesting fish there

1. a nice roach

2. the fish you call crucians are different from our crucians - we would call them wild goldfish

3. a gudgeon - looks the same as the gudgeon we know here.

4. the fish you call bullhead is one we do not have in Britain - we call fish of this type gobies - have you any more pictures of it ?

The styr looks a nice clear river - one I would happily fish myself.

Me too, especially @ 23 degrees C! I think I might travel a bit lighter than that though.

A great blog Stal1n and some brilliant photographs, thank you for posting.

Styr is a river in a west Ukraine..

You can find this fishing place at my map. But I really sorry, that is only in Ukrainian translation :) Please find place that calls "Лисин" on right column and click on it.

This is a village on bank of river Styr where my father in law was born.

2.

This is the fish that we call "silver crucian" or simply "crucian" (lat. Carassius gibelio):

And this is the fish that we call "golden crucian" (lat. Carassius carassius):

Golden crucians are very rare endangered species now :(

4.

Maybe is is a gobie. My English is poor, so I just used Google for found image and name of this fish (lat. Cottus gobio):

I think what you call a 'brasem' we would call a 'bream'.

As the others have said, great to hear about the Ukraine!

John

You never guess how we call this beautifull fish here :)

It sounds like: "lyasch"

khm.. You, Britain people, even don't have that sound at all "lya". It is something like "la" but very-very soft. And I realy don't know to explaine it for you :)

Anyway, thanks for corection. I will remember right English name for our Ukrainian lyasch :)

Looks like Neogobius fluviatilis.

I could fancy a few sessions there. What's the food like in the Ukraine?

" I will remember right English name for our Ukrainian lyasch"

Take a look at the site fishbase.org It give information that will help you avoid this sort of confusion - usually.

I'm from the US and had the same problem when talking about fish on a UK site. Fishbase will give you the scientific name if you put in the common name. It will also show you the common names in other countries. Even then there may be confusion since according to Fishbase, Cottus gobio is known in the UK as a bullhead. :D

Yes. From the picture on the blog, I thought it was either Bighead Goby, Neogobius kessleri or Monkey Goby, Neogobius fluviatilis. The extra photos suggest it is the latter one.

Gobies are one of the most difficult fish to identify, hundreds of species worldwide in salt, brackish and fresh water, and all quite small. One feature that characterises the gobies is that the two pelvic fins are fused to form a round or oval sucker. A photo of the underside of the next goby you catch would show this.

Stal1n, don't worry about your English - it is much better than my Russian :) . Our main purpose is to make sure we have identified the fish correctly. As Newt said "bullhead" means different things in different parts of the English-speaking world.
