I've been considering buying one of these (CLICKY) but wondered if anyone has tried one and what are they like to use?

I've never used one John but I have had a good look in a tackle shop. I think its main selling point is the swivelling drum helping casting, the drum didn't spin very well though (despite the bearings) so I don't think it would make a good trotting reel. If you want to cast weights using the side cast then as a much cheaper alternative to the Ray Walton Rolling 'Pin it makes sense but don't expect it to send down a 2 SSG loafer with ease.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Thanks for the reply Rusty :)

I just found this old thread, I somehow don't think I'll be buying it after all unless I can check it out thoroughly first.

Hi John - unless you are considering purchase specifically for the side-cast facility, I'd be inclined to look elsewhere. You can pick up a good quality, used Adcock Stanton for not much more money off Ebay, and it will out-perform this reel in all respects by a country mile :-) Other options you may wish to consider might be the TF Gear pin, which now can be bought new for just £40 including postage, though personally I'd try to find an Okuma Adventa pro if you want to buy new: shop around and they are available for well under £60 now!

i've owned a few of these ,more by default than choice ,but they're either good or binners no inbetweens.they free spin well enough ,theres a brake just behing the reel foot thats totally useless ,the twist mechanism is a bit clunky it does make the spool sit low away from the rod .my thoughts are they're ok ,for others to use ,i've usually give them away ,i got two from a club charity auction just last year for £5 each ,but i gave them too kids too use

its biggest letdown is they just feels wrong plastics not a good medium to build centrepins from ,the handles arn't very good either .all the ones i've had have been ok when used for trotting ,good starter reels ,but they do soon leave you wanting better .i wouldn't buy a new one ,as they're over priced for what they are .

if you want a cheap side caster ,theres a old reel called a angler scout 60/80 that'll do the job better ,all be it a bit heavier being a metal reel

if its just a cheap reel your after ,get a dragoncarp trinium ,or a second hand okuma aventa pro/sheffield or anyone of the milliad of x-pin clones.
