lads who bang on the door

Excuse me, I'm very sorry to trouble you, but I've been in prison and I'm trying to go right and this is a project approved by my probation officer. If you could buy one of these (very overpriced) household items it will help me and I'll get a good reference and be able to get a proper job.

They call every few months, complete with identity cards. Sometimes I send them away, today I bought a duster for £5. (Amazon sell them 10 for £4.09)

I wouldn't mind if the scheme is legit, but is it? Does anyone know?

A very quick google search found this:-

Warwickshire Trading Standards has again received information about young men selling household items such as dusters, tea towels and cloths door to door and claiming to be ex-offenders, just out of prison or on a probation scheme. This incident occured in the Kineton area.

There were a number of callers, probably dropped off together from a white van and working in small groups. They were carrying black holdalls and had no ID.

Warwickshire Trading Standards is not aware of any probation scheme that involves door to door selling and suspects that the ex-offender pitch is a high pressure sales technique to elicit compassionate concern and encourage people to buy when they might not otherwise.

.....I nearly commented but, due to legal reasons I refrained...

Isn't that how most commercial enterprises work?

Tell you a load of BS to get you to buy their wares.

I don't do any financial business on the door step. That means buying anything, changing power/broadband providers, or donating to any charities.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I'm with you, I just point to my " No cold callers" notice as I close the door.

Not that I get any since I put the notice up.
