Steve Walker 941
I was picking up some bits from my local tackle emporium the other day and found myself having a wee waggle of these. They feel rather nice, anyone got one? I liked the feel of the ultralight, but the shop bloke reckoned the standard rod was better for trotting. I don't need a new float rod, you understand, I have an old 13 foot Browning jobby which is perfectly adequate, but I do quite fancy something a bit nicer, maybe with an extra foot or two of length. I do like Drennan rods...
Steve Walker 941
Bump - nobody any experience of these rods?
John Weddup 22
Yes Steve I like drennan rods too. I have their matchpro quiver rods and float rods and agree with you they are brilliant. The ultralight is an out and out light roach / dace rod although it would control bigger fish but fish it with light lines to get its full benefit. Some of their series 7 rods are nearly as good. I have 2 of their specimen float rods that I also use for light alarm/bobbin work for stillwater roach. They are very good for roach but have loads of power for tench etc if needed. I have an original tench float rod but prefer this new offering. They use a 2 peice construction on the 13ft rods with a dolly 1ft butt section and this works really well. It makes the rod feel really solid and the butt section screws in on a taper and joins really well. The only thing I would wish for better would be slightly larger rings on the specimen one. This would make it a great slider rod aswell. John
Steve Walker 941
I'm toying with the idea of the lighter rod, partly because I have the Super Specialist 12' Avon/quiver that I can use for heavier fishing - but I would certainly want to use it for trotting maggot in situations where chub could be encountered. Drennan's website says "at the other extreme, chub, bream and tench can be caught fishing 3 or 4lb lines straight through", and I think in any situation where I wanted to go heavier than that I would use the Avon. Steve Walker 941
If I didn't already have a perfectly servicable match rod, I would probably go for that shakey, I'm just thinking of treating myself to something a bit fancy.I guess I am a bit of a tackle tart for the Drennan stuff! MordenMike 2
Steve I have a Matchpro Ultrllight 14' and use it for most of my float fishing, river and lake and really like it. I would n't use it for heavier work anything over 4lb mainline but I use it for trotting and caught plenty of chub on it, but it's not a rod for bullying fish on though. Excellent piece of kit. Cheers Mike! Does it pick up line decently at range? I would use it for trotting for grayling, roach, perch, and probably chub fishing with something like a couple of maggots on a strong #16 to a 3lb bottom, but not for targeting big fish in snags. I'd also use it for general waggler fishing for roach, perch and rudd where there is a chance of larger fish but they aren't the target.
