Came back from Brazil mid November with a variety of invertebrate bites.

 

Almost all cleared up in a couple of days, but one persisted. It looked like an infected bite that was turning into a boil, so we treated it as such.

 

The "boil" got bigger and turned red and nasty - so showed it to the doc, who prescribed a course of antibiotics - the redness disappeared, but the lesion kept getting bigger.

 

Not only the lesion was growing, but the idea of what it was was growing too, especially as I could detect something moving deep in my skin.

 

So last night I heaped Vaseline over the wound - whatever was in there didn't like it and started to struggle.

 

This morning by coincidence Norma and I had a health check up with the doc (a different member of the practice, who had worked in Kenya) so I showed her this lesion on my arm. She recognised it, called in the practice nurse to show her also.

 

A maggotty tail was waving about above the skin, so I handed Norma the maggot/tick tweezers I keep in my pocket (as you do)

Norma grabbed the tail, and watched by doctor and nursie (who both had the good sense to let her get on with it) started to pull. Hurt a bit, but no way was I gonna make a fuss in front of wife, lady doctor and practice nurse.

 

Out came this creature.

There are several of these flesh eating flies around the tropics, almost all with quite complicated life cycles (the insect that infests you may not be the maggot's parent, but a different species acting as intermediate host - lots of gen if you google "parasitic flies" but I won't bore you with it

 

 

 

Now treating the hole left with Savlon externally and Highland Park whisky internally.

Sounds nasty, oddly I was watching a TV program the other day about bot flies and they where also using vaseline before giving it the tweezer treatment.

Do you not have to inform HM Customs (or whatever name they use nowadays) when you import exotic species into the country :roll1:

Not anymore. After 24 hours they automatically grant a visa :)

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional :-)
