Angling Trust acts to relocate seal to protect Severn fish stocks

What a piece of sensational crap from a body that purports to speak on the national stage on behalf of anglers, I can see angling making millions of friends (not) if this proposal to shoot the seal gets approved and worse still gets actioned

Once the general public cotton on to the fact that the idea of shooting the seal has come from an angling "national body" and worse still is supported by anglers then our standing in their eyes will be pitifully low

If the seal does'nt move on its own accord then it will fall ill and die without any help from anglers, if its been in the fresh water for months as alleged then its tolerance to fresh water will be running out as its always reported by those who work with seals that they need a salt intake to survive

If anyone is in any doubt of how out of touch the Angling Trust is with the general public, they should read the comments at the end of this report of another seal being (illegally) shot and anglers being in the frame for it:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2122863/Mystery-seal-shot-dead-riverbank-anglers-blamed-eating-fish.html

I despair of our so-called leaders and their determination to generate as much terrible PR for anglers as they can. It is a travesty that this bunch of self appointed thickies are treated as if they speak for us all. If I'd joined the AT they would have had my card posted back to them in bits several times over by now.

I bet that if the seal had been hitting the wild bird population, the RSPB would be wanting the same done. Don't forget, they were the organisation that lobbied for and got a cull of the Ruddy Duck some years ago. Twice....

I really don't know what's happening to angling in this country. I'm really fed up of having words put in my mouth by morons who think it's their divine duty to stop wild creatures from eating fish for our 'benefit'.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

So, the gist of it is you anglers feel seals are like big otters. Do I have that right?

The gist of it is that demanding the killing of wildlife to protect angling interests plays very badly with the British public and the demands are unlikely to be met. It is a hiding to nothing.

If it is really necessary to lobby for this (and in my opinion it seldom is, it's just wildlife doing what wildlife does and has always done), it must be done discreetly and privately to the relevant authorities. Not through a bloody press release!

Reading on Facebook, this will be in the paper angling press next week, which means that the national newspapers will pick up on it.

So, if they shoot the seal, and the stance is that they feel pain more akin to us, is it the likelyhood that the RSPCA will prosecute for causing pain to an animal?

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional :-)

It could only be shot under licence, and it would have to be done humanely. The RSPCA wouldn't have grounds for a prosecution on that basis. It would just be terrible, terrible PR for angling. I can't see it being granted, so we will just look bad and gain nothing.
