It is with sad regret that I have heard of the death of Spike Milligan

 

My father served in the Royal Artillery, with Spike, during the war. In fact when my father first entered hospital after a stroke Spike rang the hospital to enquire after his progress. For that one act he has had my family’s affection.

 

Rest in Peace Spike.

It's strange, but only this weekend something made me start to reread his war memoirs again for the umpteenth time. Even though I know all the stories having read the books many time they still make me laugh whilst other parts really bring home the futility and waste of war. I'm too young to have been around when the Goons were on-air (although I have the recordings that are available) and I only caught the tail end of the Q series'. Because of this I shall remember him more for his writing than his broadcasting, but I will remember!

As so many, a tortured genius, who gave us so much wonderful lunacy, and laid the foundations for so much that followed.

My brother and I can be reduced to fits of helpless laughter by " put it in the curry".

Anyone else remember the sketch ( Q8 I think)

Seeing him on Room 101 not so long ago brought back the comic genius that was only spike, he'll be sorely missed, no one can follow in his shoes, so long Spike.
