It's generally accepted that with the naked eye the limiting magnitude in the countryside is 6.0 to 6.5 on a moonless night. In most cases it'll be less than this because of haze etc, whilst in urban areas it'll be considerably less. Norton's Star Atlas, that has been published in umpteen editions since 1910, is very useful here as all stars to this magnitude are shown.

 

By the way, a difference of 1 magnitude means that a star is approx 2 1/2 times brighter or fainter.
