How much flow is too much flow

I'd got for the air-stone. I don't think you want to turn the air off altogether. I'd think part of the reason your fish are so vigorous, is because of the flow you currently have. I agree, it is a bit distracting but I'd think the air stone will dampen down the noise, whilst maintaining the air flow.

 

If it doesn't work, I can think of a few other ways to go about things without turning the air-flow off. Try the stone though.

I reckon that would be ok without the Venturi working. One of my Juwel tanks came with one, I took it off because it was too noisy, just disconnected the pipe below the water level. So long as you still have a decent amount of water movement I think you will be ok.

 

Most of the effect of an airstone isn't actually the bubbles so much as the circulation. Personally, I prefer bubble curtains to airstones because they don't fall apart over time. They're just weighted perforated rubber tube.

Bubble curtains are also quite nice to look at and I suspect, because of their length, they'd dampen the noise down even further.
