Vauxhall Astra Drivers.

Recommended Posts

Recently I experienced an issue with the central locking mechanicasm on the boot of my Vauzhall Astra, however much I tried I could not get it to engage unless it was manually operated.

My Wife, bless her cotton socks, flattened the battery after forgetting to turn off the lights.

After getting a jump lead start I obviously had to reset certain electrical units, like the radio. I then finished and locked the car using the central locking key. I heard an old familiar clunk from the boot and then unlocked the car via the key.

To my surprise the boot lock had re-engaged and was operating correctly again.

So perhaps this is a remedy for this particular issue?

The central locking system uses electric motors to operate, the electric comes from the battery, if the battery is flat it will not work the central locking electrically you will have to do it manually. That is until the battery is charged again.

By the way - If you have just jump started the car the battery may not recover properly = altough it charges with the engine running this may not be enough to stop it goinf flat again, I would suggest to look into checking the electrolyte level and trickle charge the battery using a car battery charger.

The issue with the boot mechanism has been ongoing for 8 weeks.

I could only open the boot by inserting the key into the boot lock and it would not function from the central locking.

The flattening of the battery happened only 3 days ago and since the battery was recharged the boot lock now opens and closes via central locking.

Now, the flattening of the battery must have re-set something within the system thus allowing correct operation of the boot locking mechanism.

After jump starting I drove the car for over 4 hours so no danger of it dropping again.

Our Grand Cherokee once gave us trouble with the central locking..........dealer advised disconnecting the battery and when reconnected all was well.

Make sure you have the radio code noted first

Modern cars are often like PC's in that regard. Resetting them, by disconnecting the battery and leaving it a while before reconnecting, will often sort minor woes.

I also have a cheap OBD reader that I got from eBay for £20. It's fantastic for checking any fault codes and, once you're sure there's nothing actually wrong, resetting them. A dealer would charge you for that :)

If the key slot in your Astra boot is Vertical then it will not operate with the central locking, if it's horizontal it will.

Maybe you reset it by accident by operating it with the key?

Did you charge your battery?

No idea why I put a 1.

The central locking has always operated the boot lock from the outset.

All of a sudden the boot lock could not be unlocked or locked unless the key was used in the lock.

The rest is as said, flat battery for over 12 hours then jump leads to get it started and from that point the boot now can be locked or unlocked via central locking control on key.
