We are now into mid February and spring is just around the corner. With the warmer temps and longer days we have been out in Georgia Strait trolling for winter chinook salmon and fly fishing the rivers around Squamish and Whistler. We haven’t been out on the Fraser River fishing for sturgeon, but have heard some decent reports!

Salmon- We have had the bulk of our recent success fishing the Gulf Island’s over the last few weeks. There has been very good numbers of winter chinook salmon in the 5 – 15 pound range. The eastern shorelines of Galiano and Valdez Islands have been the hot spots. We have been fishing spoons right off the bottom in 100 to 160 feet. There has not been a lot of bait around, but the fish are there. We have been averaging 6 to 12 hook ups on a full day trip. Most of the fish are just below the legal size limit, but there are legal fish in the mix. Vancouver Harbour has perked up a little bit over the last few days. There was a decent bite off the West Vancouver shoreline on Monday afternoon where there was a dozen fish hooked between 3 or 4 boats. Crabbing has been very good in Vancouver Harbour and we are dropping traps on every charter!

Steelhead/Trout- The Squamish system has picked up this week for steelhead. Intruder patterns have been the ticket on the lower Squamish River. This fish are chrome bright coming in with the rising tide. Fishing for bull trout on the has been pretty decent with some nice fish up to 6 pounds kicking around. Egg and sculpin patterns have been the ticket. As we progress into March and April we expect the bulk of the spring steelhead run to enter local rivers. With warmer temperatures the fish will respond to a well presented fly.

Sturgeon- We are getting ready to kick off our sturgeon season in the next few weeks. With warmer temperatures and the arrival of the Fraser River eaulachon run in late March, sturgeon will become active and get out of their over wintering holes. Vancouver Sport Fishing Center has the most convenient sturgeon fishing in the city with lower Fraser River departures. Some of the best sturgeon fishing of the year is in the Lower Fraser River in the spring. Give us a call to get out on a sturgeon trip….our trips depart a mere 20 minute drive from downtown Vancouver!
