Wicker Basket?

Does anyone still use wicker baskets and a split cane rod a pipe and a deer stalker hat when they fish. Is this not the fashion nowadays or am i out dated?

Wicker baskets had one great advantage - the guy in the next peg could never creep up on you because you always heard a creaking noise when he stood up!

 

Mind, I'm talking about the rectangular type of basket which came later than the oval creel, I think. My mate's dad - a dyed-in-the-wool pipe smoker - used a creel the whole time we were growing up, but I think he was simply too tight to buy a replacement.

my dads still got his two creels in the garage! still full of Mitchell reels and 4lb line as well probably!!

id rather have them than the wheelbarrows and tents so prevalent these days!!!

I've got one and love it. Wouldn't swop it for a plastic box for the world.

It's comfortable, carries everything I need and just reminds me of my youth when 'every' angler I watched appeared to have one.

Damn right. I can't imagine the larger carp boys sitting on
one now. I remember Chris Yates and his smoker doing a bit of fishing and
having a kip in the midday sun up against the tree. No markers or spods or
depth finders braid powerful rod or plastic this or that. No dandy Morebrass
videos in the tackle shops. Just a tub of worms and some maggots please and a
tin of luncheon meat (or horse who knows). What seriously has happened to Fishing?
I am all for mods but it really has got out of sorts. Who needs Braid or
special rods buzzers or a fancy reclining chair? The Floats in tackle shops was
in rows and sold out so quickly but now it’s mostly ledgering. The best part of
all the fishing I do is the float fishing. An old geezer I might be but I liked
the smell of a maggot in the tackle shop not some pick n mix sweetie stand!

It's not all bad Dave, but I feel much as you do.

But that's the beauty of angling, you do it how you want, (within the rules), and how you enjoy it most. Stuff the 'got to have the latest' brigade. Be like Frank, and do it your way, you'll still catch.

My Granmother gave me a Wicker basket when I was 9 years old. I kept it until my late twenties until some shite took it when he robbed my Garage for my fishing gear.

 

Whatever is said, on a hot day the advantage of sitting on a Wicker basket is that you get airflow around your lower extremeties and unlike a plastic box you don't stick to the seat.

Mine had a replacable waterproof lining Stephen, (home made, actually a big plastic bag).

 

Fishing a match on the tidal R Wharfe, and the tide came up higher than expected, (half way up the basket). The bank was so steep that I had to sit it out until the tide dropped. I had to do something after that.

 

The main problem I found, was that after a few seasons, mine had about a 20degree lean from sitting on uneven banks.
