Darrell?

A broadband connection doesn`t need a dial-up connection. The whole idea is that you`re pemanently connected. Otherwise, you`ve been sold a pup?

When you say 3X speed. I take it you mean 3 times as fast as a 56k modem? That`s the notion of broadband taken to its lowest level!!

Unfortunately, that`s how many servers are selling their service!

True broadband should be at least 10X a 56k modem, and never need a dial up connection. If you switch off your computer, the connection should be there automatically when you boot up again!!

But some firms are selling connections that are not `true` broadband. They rely on the gullibility of folk not conversant with the technology.

Yes. They provide a faster connection than a 56k dial up service. They even spout `Always connected, and you can use your phone as well`?

But unless you subscribe to a speed of at least 1meg, you can run into problems.

Paul.

We don`t use J`s anymore!!

I use Tiscali BB, the 10x version and am very pleased with the permanent connection and the speed.

Totally reliable for me.

The broadband connection, that I share with next door, gives me, at it's best, about 50X the modem speed at it's worst. Usually about 20X the modem speed, which allways seemed to start fast at the beginning of a download and gradually get slower. Sometimes it was down below 1K!

Mate of mine has the ten speed one and seems happy.

Tiscali are currently adverting a 150k 'Broadband' connection on the TV @ £15.99. I suspect that this is the 3x one.

Thanks for the info guys.

I went for this because it stated that it was broadband and always on line, it's sold as a 3X faster broadband connection - seems it's not!!

It took 23 attempts to connect this morning, I'm going fishing now but will have words with tiscali ( When they answer the helpline phone!! )

You probably cant get through ' cos they are all asleep in India :D and when you do you won't be able to understand what they say!

The £15.99 package is "up to 157kbs", the £27.00 package is up to 570kbs.

Even though it is "allways on line" your PC still has to make a connection or "open a port" each time you switch on/start up if you have gone off line.

Do you get "page unavailable"showing or is it that you can't actually get connected to the server?

usually in the top ten rankings.

What needs to be understood by a lot of people, and is ususlly hidden in the small print, is that Broadband quality is dependant on several factors.

First, how far are you from the exchange ?

not "as the crow flies", but by actual cable length. Broadband is generally of a good quality up to about 5 miles from the exchange (cable run). More than that and the electrical signal starts to get distorted, and lose signal strength.

Second, What is the contention ratio, and what use is going on in that contention.

This is basically how many people are sharing the bandwidth of the Broadband stream. It is usually around 50:1 ie 50 people are sharing the bandwidth. Now, if those 50 people are on at the same time, the speed can deteriorate.

That is why you will always get good and bad reports about any Broadband service.

However, some services just start out bad, and get worse as more subscribers join up ! No names mentioned !!!

Den, I have spoken to them and your right they're always foreign and difficult to understand.

The pop up says unable to make a connection, but their blurb says no need to dial up - always on line, clearly this is not the case.

This time I've managed to connect first time.
