Cheap tackle, cheap bait, transport was a bike and all I caught for several years was Rudd - at least it was sunny back then.

I still get the same feelings whenever I go fishing no matter what tackle, bait, method or species involved.

Hope I never lose it.

Would not mind a bag of big Rudd now but sadly a species in rapid decline.

Oh yes....catching 2lb perch all day on massive bloodsucking lobworms dug from the railway embankment. Also using a float that had been your uncle's. It had a metal wire eye and it was painted army green with a chipped yellow tip. It was one of only 2 floats you owned. The big one and the wee one. Your rod cost a tenner and the reel said Woolco on it.....sigh! I'd be back there tomorrow if I could.

Ahh a thread or us 'oldies', (never mind eh Stephen). :P .

 

It's funny Steve should mention the smell of his tackle box, (snigger). My Dad died when I was 10, and I got all his tackle. The smell of linseed oil still takes me back to those days, everything seemed to smell of it, even though it was only on the nets.

 

I was a bit reluctant to go fishing or a while, after my fathers death, but about 6 months later during the school holidays, my older brother took me to Tadcaster, where I caught a perch, and that started me off again. Then it was 2 or 3 times a week after school, down to the canal, and the weekends out to Tadcaster, Boston Spa, or Wetherby. It took over my life, and everything revolved around angling. Other than actually fishing, the main excitment came on a thursday, when I ran home from school, and straight to the newsagents for the Angling Times, (worth reading then).

I wish I could get that same excitment back, but cynicism comes with age. Or should that be realism?

I remember that first cast with a stringer of boilies on PVA string, now that was propa fishing and all. You don't see the art of threading some boilies on to a stringer needle much these days. Then the age of PVA bags before all that new fangled net in tube stuff came along.

 

This will make you laugh, I know it makes me sound old but back in the dark ages we used to crush boilies with our hands, no really its not a joke and if they where propa tuff like we used a scissors or pliers. Shocking stuff I know, those young wippa snappers now have korda crushers and boilis cutters.

 

Everything was better a long long time ago, we burned people for being witches, sent kids up chimneys, had a live expectancy of zero, had no Otters. Life was so good in the black and white days. Modern life is rubbish.

In truth, I don't want any part of the "good ol' days". I'm to dam old.

 

Besides, I used to walk through 3 miles of snow to fish. It was uphill both ways.
