It seems we need more tackle

In fact it seems we need a different rod and reel for practically every style of fishing and every species we fish for.

I can appreciate some species need a more specialist rod, but mostly I fish with a minimum of kit. I have a match rod for canals and my 501. I have a carbon match for slightly heavier work and one carp rod with bait runner. So mostly I am fishing with one rod all the time.

This probably sounds silly, but cost and weight now have to be kept to a minimum.

Any body else feel the same?

i used to just have 3 rods ,float rod ,quiver rod, specimem rod then came my jw avon quiver .that was fine for a while then i got into match fishing in the eighties started as a challenge between mates ended up taking it seriously my four rods turned into 10 rods ,original 4 plus 3xwaggler rods (2x13ft pair and a 15ft margin/trotting rod ,2xfeeder rods ,2xheavy feeder/method rods ,then a pole & whips joined the line up but i couldn't dedicate time to match fishing so i decided to go back to chasing fish ,all types of fish using whatever method was needed ,so i addded 4xspinning rods ,2xfly rods another pole ,barbels rods (a matched pair and a single heavier flood rod) more float/trotting rods 2x11ft ,2x13ft & two 14ft rods

over the years i've replaced some with newer models but also added 2x15ft trotting rods (one i rebuilt from a combo 4 legth rod ,the other was a harrison 15ft gti float rod that i'm just putting the finishing touches to after having to refurbish a damaged handle ,and a year long wait) i have several rods i keep as loaners (my family borrow them off me ,& i aint letting them near my personal rods) & all my rods have corrisponding reels to match ,theres a couple of modern rebuilt rod projects and i have half a dozen or so cane rods ,some usable others awaiting a refurbishment.

i've not done a head count latley but i beleave its still around thirty plus rods even after putting 3 or 4 loaner /spare rods into a fundraising auction

trust me ,i'm a angler .you can never have too many/much tackle .or in my case hoared stuff

With respect i think most of us have tackle all over the place but i am assuming it's on the subject of what you take with you to the bank side. I very rarely will be static on a river and so travel very light in fact too light at times. The off season though is Lakes and its nice to chill out for 2 or 3 days in one spot and try to get the fish come to you or by placing it in those little crevices and patches you know they frequent so in that case i bring the kitchen sink so to speak . I look forward to one style and after a while look forward to the other when the rivers come into play in Autumn :)s

thats why i have so many rods etc so i can take just the right tool for the job ,knowing each rod & reel has its perpose ,i'll think about where i'm fishing and take what i think is the correct length rod ,right type of rod and the appropiate reel or reels .i may also take another rod as a alternative choice sometimes or as a spare loaner .

if i was ,say going to the lower itchin ,for grayling ,roach or whatever then my choice would be two 13ft trotting rods ,a centrepin and a closedfaced reel ,i'll get there and set up the rod that i'll use ,the second rod may or may not get used but its there just in case .

i carry a small holdal/quiver that takes my two rods ,banksticks and landing net ,a stool and a bag of tackle bits sometimes a custion/unhooking mat ,everything is light enough to carry all day as i like to travel light ,which means for me to optimising what i use ,anything not really needed is left in the car or at home .i still think i take too much ,but fail to prepare ,is preparing to fail .i'd rather take a little too much than too little .although i do often forget crucial items

me no stool just the mat a rod (sneakily my avon/quiver) and baitbelt and bag of bits & bobs

carrying too much was one of the reasons i stopped match fishing in the eighties (after hurting my back at work) ,i'm much happier travelling light .i have different set ups for different kinds of fishing so i only need to take whats required on the day.

I see what you are saying but as i said i think that session fishing as in overnight or 48 hours and not just tackle but other bits do we take too much :)

now thats where i do fail ,if i'm say on a weekend away on a fish-in someware ,i apply the same logic and take a set up for each kind of fishing i expect to be doing ,plus the creature comforts ,plus if its a fish in where theres going to be some who lack equipment for that kind of fishing (might be a new experiance for them or they fish on a tight budget and don't waste money on things they might only use once or twice. ) then i'll take spares if i have them .like spare centrepins etc so others can give give it a go .then on these longer sessions i do take too much ,too many possibilities to cover

even on a all day session ,i try to keep the tackle strictley to what i need ,sometimes i sit there with a ledger rod out ,for tench say and think maybe i should of brought a float rod and used a different method ,but theres always next time.

i do tend to probably over think my fishing sometimes ,the planning etc but thats all part of the adventure for me ,the inspiration ,the planning & sometimes a pre-session visit to get the lay of the land .planning what tackle to take ,getting it ready .planning the methods etc it all adds too the experiance as a whole for me .the fishing its self is the icing on the cake ,any fish the reward .even if its just a session on the local canal 1000 yds or so away. :hypocrite:

Chav,

For the most part you've described almost every Brit I've ever fished with.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best (paraphrased by Phone) - "Life [angling] is a journey, not a destination." I admire you as a breed for that.
