What is everyone up to at the moment?

It's great to hear so many stories of Tench being caught. I have tended to agree with those who think that its the increase in day light hours that trigger them to start feeding rather then just the rise in water temperature. I have had Tench early in past years but my thoughts where that this year with the constant cold it might just have been to much for any real Tench activity. Sounds like I might be wrong, well hopefully I am. The first Tench of the year/season (depends how you count) is always a little special. It's good to hear so many are off the mark already.

Increase in daylight hours though will increase the water temperature regardless. I think it just depends on how warm it is when the sun is out how quickly it does . I think both are doing the same thing as more light means more warmth.

Not always Dave

I take water temps regularly and the water I am fishing saw the temp drop the week before easter. The water was certainly warmer early january than it was all february and march.

Daylight is the trigger for sure, although I have found that early season gravel pit tench are pretty nocturnal. Once the water warms and the bloodworm beds kick off, this usually swings back to daylight feeding.

It's been a cold start to the spring, but I have this pic from mid-April 2010, and I reckon it was colder then:

On that session we caught a lot of tench (in fact the then lake record for the biggest hit was broken), but no big ones, and pretty much all at night (brrr). I don't think longer daylight hours necessarily means an increase in water temperature.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Commercial perching mainly but slow where I go.

Went on Sunday - one fish of 3.2 and the swim wrecked by a low double carp on a prawn! Chap opposite had 5 to nearly 3 and some huge roach all on the prawn.

Dusted off the bream/tench rods and took a sneaky afternoon yesterday as I had heard on the grapevine that the carp anglers were bemoaning the fact they were only catching tench and bream. Unfortunately I blanked spectacularly- and then it chucked down with rain. Water was still brutally cold. Still its better than sitting at home in the dry and warm eh.

I would have thought it will take an awful lot of continuous days of high temperatues and sunshine to have much effect on water temperatures especially on big bodies of water.

You would be surprised how quickly the margins and shallow area's warm when either the sun shines or air temps are above water temp and the wind blows. What is a wind chill factor to our warm bodies is a wind warming factor to cold water.

Big bodies of water will take ages this year but even in the big reservoirs I shall be looking at the shallow (15ft or less) area's soon.

At present though well sheltered south or westerly facing bits of water that are shallowish but near to deep water are my hunting grounds.

Well my coarse fishing close season has lasted nearly two years and I am happliy wandering the country "fluff flinging" as some like to call it.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

Thanks John, some very useful information.

I've just been sorting out my fly fishing stuff ready for the first trip of the year, I'm really looking forward to it now :) I'm hoping the rain forecast for this weekend doesn't materialise, in which case I will be very tempted to have an evening or two doing a bit of reservoir bank fishing (Steve W - take note!).

Dales,

It seems to me from a logical view that light has to be the trigger. Remember, in still(ish) water over about 8 - 10 feet the temperature is ALWAYS at or near 39F.
