Lake turnover a few questions

RUDD

Recommended Posts

Den, I used the highly reliable "do my fingers feel like they are going to drop off method" A few weeks ago I could not bear to have my hands any where near the water and once wet they needed drying immediately and a few minutes tucked under my arm pits to warm up. This weekend I was happy to spend ages cleaning out bait boxs, washing bank sticks and in general having wet hands :-) I go fishing to catch fish, not to collect scientific data :-)

Just had a long chat with a fishery consultant/suppler who has been contacted by dozens of fishery owners in the last 24hours with fish deaths and lethargic fish showing on surface.

Its the weather I am afraid.

John

SAPS also known as cold water fungus will be responsible for that.

It is in EVERY water and usually is a secondary infection but not always - during cold winters like the few we have had it can trigger itself.

In the last few weeks lake turnover has occured and surface layers are warmer etc due to sudden temp changes - all the ill fish that have been moaching about during winter come to the surface.

It is very possible the lake turnover triggers SAPS which can survive on uneaten bait, the bug could be released from lake bed and attach itself to a passing fish.

Its a natural thing that cannot be treated in any form of scale involving a fishing venue.

Rudd,

Just my experience, I can't remember a single case where Saprolegia was considered a "primary" cause for seasonal fish kills (execpt in salmon and sea trout). I thought(?) the fish was already fatally sick or injured before SAP became an issue? Isn't SAP a fishkeepers kind of disease where the safety of a single fish is at risk?

You understand this post is mostly questions. I haven't read anything about SAP for 30 years.

I am very aware of this fungus as I have seen the effects before and it is not a nice thing to see.

RUDD,

A quote from the URL you suggested. """"The combination of stress, suppressed immune systems, and increased spore counts give sap the ability to cause major problems in colder water. Sap infections are commonly the cause of “winter kill.” """"""

Never to old to learn

The worst thing is that it is present in all freshwater and even moist earth.

If Saprolegnia is causing an problem in a fishery I'd say the real issue was overall management and stocking levels.

I couldn't agree more. The trouble is, what's become the accepted norm' for stocking levels far exceeds natural levels.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
