chesters1:

i hadnt heard officially via e`mail about the 150hrs clause ,typical of bt,i feel sorry for anyone that uses "anytime" (i use surftime) working from home or whatever  they have us over a barrel we still have to pay line rental even if we use someone elses isp (i use bt as my isp as well )so its over £20 a month to them ,who do you use???? maybe there singling out users NOT using them as a isp as well :(

Btw anyone using smurf-time...

I'd recommend using a Uni's server.

(I used to use Lancaster Uni alumni isp....very quick & connected 1st time....& you don't have to be a student)

http://www.12free.co.uk used to be good , dunno if it's still going.

(YUP still giong but "$ponsered" by etc... carp)

Hi every one :) ,

I got the message through from bt to day. Heres the garbled letter I wrote back in response.

Dear Sir/Madam

The package sold as Bt Anytime isn't really anytime anymore is it. If you sell a product called Bt Anytime and market it as being free access to the Internet 24/7 then I guess some people may just buy it to use it that way. I am not one of those people, just in case your wondering. I get disconnected while I'm working (probably about 1-2 hours a day on average). Sometimes if I get a day off I do a stint on my website which could be a lot longer.

If you want to start talking about "level playing fields" all of a sudden then why don't you subsidise we who live in the countryside and are trying to compete with the city's high-speed connection. I live in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland; I've wanted ADSL for ages now. I have entered my postcode into the Bt site and registered my interest many times. I have to run a busy Internet site with a connection speed of 30 - 40k so don't talk to me about "level playing fields". It takes a long time, not many would have the patience. Do you want me to move? Or are you thinking about "levelling the playing field" a little, pray tell.

Yours patiently

Kelly King

We don't seem to get any trouble with http://www.onetel.co.uk

We've got about 6 machines connected to it.

Some of them are connected all the time.

Downloads are between 50 and 60 Kb/s.

Steve Burke:

It's just one of the problems of living in a village I suppose. An issue for the Countryside Alliance perhaps?

A local firm is trying to set up a wireless broadband network for users in remote areas.

Not sure how big an area they intend to cover, but Tim Snape is fairly switched on, it would appear.

They might be worth an enquiry.

OOPS!! Not allowed to advertize! Still! the prefects might not be looking.

I tried for weeks to get BT broadband set up with phone calls, them sayig my credit card was no good and my credit card company saying nothing was wrong with it, so am now looking for another broadband operator, I tried NTL when they came round asking if we wanted cable tv and said yes, guess what, they laid the cables down the road but didn't hook it up to the houses (Strange)when I enquired they said I had to get permission from the local council and fill in a form send it to them and they would send another form to the council who would send it to me and then I send it to NTL, this happened over 6 months ago (still waiting) they all say they want us to go on broadband but don't help us get there. I am one of the lucky ones who live within the limits of a local exchange as well.

So does that mean if my neighbour hooks up to broadband we could share the line and the cost and no one would Know?

BT Broadband is available in my area.....

on my local exchange......

but I am more than 4 km from it so I cant have it !!!! (That is info from BT and tested from their website)

However, I am with freeserve anytime at the moment, and they say .............

Yes no problem ..Broadband sir.. of course pay your money and we will set you up....... hmmmmm still using the BT line tho, surely they cant know something that BT dont?????

Be wary of this. I had exactly the same but they use postcodes to determine weather you can get it, not actual on-the-ground cable length. They'll take your money, pass the order to BT then come back when BT tell them it can't be done! Even BT's web site isn't infallible for the same reason. If you're on the edge of an exchanges area the site may say yes, but when they investigate your specific house it may be too far.

I'd recommend Entanet. I've been with them almost since they started having started with a 14/4 modem and progressing to ADSL via ISDN. They aren't the cheapest, but I've always felt you get what you pay for and I think they're pretty good.

One downside - if you don't get the wires-only conversion they make you pay up-front for a year (or at least they did for me because I was an ISDN conversion), but these days it's cheaper to go wires-only and buy your own modem anyway. Of course, if they've had any sense, since I converted they'll have removed this paying up-front nonsense, but it's only a small percentage that would be affected anyway.
