You don't need Java to run Javascript, the two things are very different. Javascript is a scripting language which is part of your browser. Java is a language and the runtime environment it needs to work, which (amongst other things) can then be used to make programs which run inside your browser.

As far as Java (not Javascript) is concerned, my personal view is that unless you really need Java in your browser because you use a site which depends on it, you should either disable it in the browser if you have some other software which needs it to be installed (Control Panel, Java, Security tab, untick "enable Java in the browser") or else if you don't need it at all, completely uninstall it. It is an unnecessary security risk, and I also don't trust Oracle because of the way they try to bundle crapware with updates.
