Garden ponds without liners

talking to an acquaintance the other day who's dug a 4' x 2' pond 1m deep which is clay lined. He said the water is draining to a certain level and stays at that level.

 

Any ideas ?

There's a hole in the clay. probably.

 

Rooted plants dying can sometimes cause that, or growing tree roots.

 

Not all substrates are suitable for puddled clay , so it could be one of quite a few things.
