Car tyres

My last two cars - A Ford Mondeo and a Vauxhall Vectra.

Common as muck - nothing special, factory fitted alloys.

Every time I have needed a new tyre - do you think any tyre place near me has the size I need in stock - no chance.

MOT today - car failed as a tyre needs changing - put one on then I tell them - they had to order one from somewhere else which arrived ten mins ago!

How many tyre sizes can there possibly be? The bloke at the garage told me there are hundreds.

The worst thing was not even the local Ford garage holds one I needed in stock.

GGGGrRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

It's not just the size but the speed rating that adds to the many THOUSANDS of tyre sizes, makes etc. It's 12 years since I was in the tyre business and it was a nightmare trying to keep a good selection of sizes in stock. When I sold up my stock was valued at around £20k at wholesale prices and my place was pretty small. We relied to a large degree on the big stockists around the area, the trick was to know when their deadline was throughout the day.

What size tyres were they? My local garage (not a tyre specialist) almost always has the right size for my Mondeo estate (195/50/16) and on the odd time they haven't they can get them within a couple of hours. You need a new supplier, mate.

The lotus is a nightmare - lots of options for the rears, which are something like 225/40/17, but the fronts are something obscure like 165/55/16, not a size that many high performance tyres come in. If you want to keep the OEM size you are basically stuck with Lotus branded Yokohama AD07s which are just silly expensive.

Si,

Wouldn't they just be wider - more racey so to speak. The first number is tyre width (?).

RUDD,

The National Highway Transportation Safety Board has 35,000+ different tyres (tires) certified.

That figure is the width, but because the sidewall height is quoted as a percentage of the tread width, a wider tyre with the same profile will have a greater radius. Greater radius will alter the gearing and throw the speedo reading.

If that's for a vectra then its the wrong size for 17" factory alloys, Vectra alloys take 215/45/17

Sorry they were for the Mondeo, cant remember what the Vectra had - it was a fully Irmschered up job direct from a Vauxhall dealership.
