For the record the weather has been mainly cloudy with a few sunny intervals and cool with a high of 14C(57F) and light westerly winds becoming variable. The weather is cyclonic so pressure is low. The water temperature is 14C(57F), having fallen from 15C(59F) last week and 17C(63F) the previous week. However that's the temperature just below the surface. Up until a gale in the week when the water was mixed up it would have been much cooler in the depths. As a result the temperature at depth has probably increased since then despite the surface temperature falling. The tench started becoming more active yesterday after the latest spring for almost 100 years, although the Carp Lake being smaller and shallower has been fishing well for several weeks. Weed is only just beginning to show but is almost everywhere except on the bars. The water is very clear but daphnia and a few tadpoles are now beginning to appear.

There's been the usual slow start with all the disturbance of lots of anglers arriving on a venue that rarely sees more than a handful. The first fish was a rare daytime eel of about 3lbs to Tincatinca. Some tench have been rolling and fizzing in a few swims and Anthony78 lost a big male of about 7lbs at the net but landed a female of 4-06.

The highlight until I left early evening though was a cracking tench of 10-02 to Errmm that came just before 4.30pm. This was built like a carp with a length of 23ins and a girth of 18 1/2ins despite containing almost no spawn. Interestingly it ran out of girth a long way from the tail, signifying it's young and got a lot more fattening up to do. So a potential 13lber in a few years with spawn!

After today's BBQ I decided on a tactical retreat as I was pretty sure my tally of 0 fish was unlikely to improve, and I wanted to avoid all the rain forecast tonight and tomorrow. Congrats again to errm, that was a superb tench. Fingers crossed me leaving has spurred the fish into getting their heads down for the last day, and a few more people get some results.

It was a nice trip though, it can be a tricky water so the odd blank is to be expected, but catching up with everyone made up for that.

Good luck for tonight chaps!

I left early as well due to feeling unwell and lack of any activity in my swim.

As you heard I managed to catch a new PB again, more I felt out of my three rods it was the only one I fished half well and I was just quite lucky, some things I did might have helped but in the end it was very difficult even with tench feeding in my swim pretty much all of Saturday. My other two rods I felt I didn't do too much right with which means that over the next few days I'll think about the problems and come away a better angler than before I went, so all in all a new PB/Fantastic Tench, I think I learnt more than I have in the previous two trips to Wingham combined and had a chance to catchup with all the great people there.

Thanks to Steve for letting me fish again and helping me out with the swim, the bailiffs for lifts and advice and Peggy for a great BBQ as usual :-). I'd also like to say another big thanks to Steve because without him lending me a pair of scales (I'd forgotten mine)!! They helped make the trip much more special :-).

The fishing looked like it was starting to pick up a bit when I left, I think there might be a few more tench caught between now and tonight but if the rain comes in tonight as expected then I think that might be it for the fishin. I'll look forward to the updates and keep my fingers crossed for everyone (especially any Wingham first timers).

Steve, could you email me the pictures of the tench please? If you want mine I can send them to you as well, if you don't have my email address then PM me. Feel free to post the pictures of the tench also, I think your pictures came out better than mine.

Well done on the 10 lb tench Errrm

I've usually done better at Wingham in the rain than when its dry, but then I am targeting perch as priority (muggy murky drizzle preferred to rain lashing down though)

What I don't like is an Easterly component in the wind, and this morning, on the Kent/Sussex border, about 50 miles WSW of Wingham, I felt just that.

Seems to have warmed up a bit during the day though, and overcast sky forecast, which is a better sign, so good luck everyone for the rest of the trip.

I've come home shattered and am off to bed. I'll post catch results tomorrow morning. However, unsurprisingly with a change to a NE wind, it's not been a good day.
