... probably full of snails, nymphs and daphnia! Maybe the perch are the same?

not feeding hard because they're not hungry, rather than because of the cold spring...

Tiz bad when they're no bitin', but wuss when they're no there !

I find it hard to believe in anorexic perch - its like postulating a vegetarian Wingham BBQ !

Seasons are funny old things.

Some vegetation and creatures time seasonal activities by the time of day, others by the temperature, and some a combination of both.

With activities of different species dependent on getting the timing right, such as emerging when the food is ready, in 'normal' years everything comes together just right.

But when length of day and daily temperature gets out of kilter, it all gets a bit chaotic.

I was surprised at the amount of snail in the water, yet weed growth so slow (I've always figured that it was weed growth that promoted an explosion of snails and other pond-life at the end of June that had the tench shunning anglers baits).

When spring doesn't go to plan, it's all a bit unknown with pond-life and water temperature stratus etc all a bit mixed up, challenging our angling traditions in perverse ways.

From the pics of the tench, it seems pretty clear that they haven't just been hiding away and waiting for warm weather - they look pretty fat to me, probably full of snails, nymphs and daphnia! Maybe the perch are the same?

I think they're not feeding hard because they're not hungry, rather than because of the cold spring...

A few weeks ago the tench were very thin and clearly hadn't been feeding. Now they're certainly fattening up. However whether they're not feeding or we can't catch them I don't know.

Certainly this is a very strange year weatherwise. The feeding times are strange too. Until a week or so ago most of the tench were still coming out at night (as they normally do early April). Instead of switching as usual to morning feeding they're now coming out in the afternoon, normally the quietest time for Wingham tench.

An additional thought - perhaps the tench have now been caught enough that they are beginning to get cute. Tench on hard fished waters can be infuriating at times. Thoughts?

I very much doubt it. Some of the areas hardly see a bait except in the Fish-In. The tench in these areas certainly won't have got cute.

I think it's more likely that they're feeding on naturals.

I fished my local pond the last two evenings (using up leftover bait from Wingham is my excuse). On Tuesday evening, I picked a spot I haven't fished before, a shallow-ish reed fringed bay. I fished a method feeder out into the bay and caught skimmers, but there was a lot of tench activity in the margins. So I went back the next evening with a float rod to fish the margins and the tench had just vanished. And I caught more skimmers! This is a water an acre and a half in size with a big head of tench. They don't have the disappearing room that tench at Wingham have, but they can do it all the same. There have recently been big tench catches one day and not a fish caught the next.

I blame the strange and changeable weather.

Thanks again to Steve and all the bailiffs and extended help that goes into the annual fishin.... Without which it just wouldn't happen.. Or indeed be the same without theirs' and everyone else's company.

Special thanks to Peggy and 'helpers' as ever for the BBQ...

I for one have a healthy appetite and never take for granted the great scoff laid on! Thanks

Always nice to see faces old and new!

I blanked royally! TBH I couldn't even 'catch' my thoughts when I arrived through stress.... 3 days in the most idilic setting soon sorted that!

Well done to those who caught and got pb's!

Doesn't a year fly by?!!

Tight lines

(... Just realise I'm posting on the catch report... 1 lost eel probably doesn't qualify!! Lol)

A fantastic tench, congrats again Errm!

I reckon AN guests have now had more double figure tench than syndicate members :D

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
