Not so sure of the benfits of individuals joining but seems a sensable move for a club to join.

You'll get a lot of negative feedback here about the Angling Trust, especially from those who go sea fishing. Indeed, some on here will be anti whatever the AT does, good or bad. With a few it's almost a crusade! In this respect it's like any form of politics - those who have the strongest views shout louder than the rest, especially if they're against.

However as a fishery owner I have no doubt whatsoever that membership of the Angling Trust is beneficial. So Wingham Fisheries is a member, as I am as an individual. This is despite not agreeing with everything they've done. But then I don't agree with everything any single political party has done!

Partly I'm a member because angling needs a strong and united voice. And whatever anyone says the Angling Trust is the angling body the government most listens to. The Trust has done and continues to do a lot of work behind the scenes.

Partly it's self-interest. Fish Legal will represent your club if it has any legal issues, including pollution. In this respect think of it as an insurance policy.

In fact, if I were a member of your club and one of your waters was polluted I'd be asking questions of the committee if the club weren't a member of the Angling Trust, especially now it's been raised.

I haven't joined as an individual, because essentially I would not want some of the things that the Trust has said to be said in my name.

If the option of joining Fish Legal without joining the Trust were extended to those living in England as it is to those in Scotland, Wales and NI, I would do so.

I think a fishery owner would be nuts not to have fish legal membership, whether via the trust or directly. It's OK for an individual to take a position on principle, but for someone with responsibility for a water practicality must be foremost.

I'm with pretty much with Steve on this. I haven't, and won't, join as an individual because there is much that I don't trust about the Trust. I see them as a self elected body, formed with no mandate from the people they say they represent. I don't agree with their reported views on aquatic predators, their stance on the freshwater catch and release policy, and the apparent secrecy that seems to surround some of their actions.

I wish that the ACA had been kept separate from the ATr, and I would have continued to support it as a separate body, as it stands now, I can't.

There still seems some confusion as how they see their roll in angling. Some see it as a representative body, others (may be wishful thinking), as a governing body.

In the future, I can see them attempting to take over much of the angling work done by the EA. In my opinion this would be a disaster for angling.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
