Steve - you asked about letting Windows Defender run again. Since you have another AV program you are happy with and since you NEVER want two active resident AV programs running, its probably best that Windows Defender remain inactive.

 

About the only part of it you might want would be the firewall portion and I'm honestly not sure if you can set it up to only run that part. Also, there are much better firewall programs available than the one you get with the Vista version of Defender.

 

Note to any readers of this topic who use Windows 8 - you have a very different (improved) version of Windows Defender so much of this advice WILL NOT apply to your PC.
