That's the nylon cord from an American jug line. One where the fish died and the bird might also.

 

To some degree I'm with Chesters1. If the birds feet are of concern we ought to be able to see the feet. Poorly framed question if the line is down the gullet.

Edit: I've seen birds of prey tote a jug line, jug and all, for a day or two before exhaustion sets in. Happens in the very hottest part of summer when the fish die quickly or the fisherman has used small fish for bait.

It is not possible to see the birds feet as this is a family site. It's what the bird is standing on that would be far too gruesome. It was a pheasant that had line or leader wrapped round it and had died from starvation. It was a lesson to never leave loose line around. The line looks like a leader of some sort.

He was pulling it out of the way after half eating it. Even then it started to get wound his legs too.

 

If this bird had been a wild bird it would also be another bird’s death. I saw this once with a peregrine falcon. The duck must have been struggling and obviously it’s an easy meal for a raptor. The falcon then got wrapped up in it too. At least i got to the falcon and had it in re -hab for a week feeding it through a syringe.

 

I have seen this but was wondering what line as it was so thick. It's bloody as the bird was eating so it had got that way. It was a sorry sight. The lake was very close to the sea but even so it was still far enough away . The only other solution to it is that somehow it may have been discarded by a gull or something but i can't really see that as a freshwater leader

Its not gruesome a child should learn what death is and how dead things are recycled ,its something glimpsed on every road in the country from flat as a pancake hedgehogs to grossly inflated badgers
