Program Manager crashes

My wife's machine is crashing right left & centre with the following error. Anybody any advice on how to fix it? It's Windows 98 Second Edition, and so far I've reloaded Windows, Netscape, Norton Systemworks & IE6 on the grounds that they seemed to be getting most of the errors, but to no avail. Help!

David I know absolutely zilch about computers but mine was a real pain recently, it was crashing just for fun several times a day with no pattern whatsoever and it turned out to be a faulty processor,we went through all sorts of routines to cure it and even changed the hard drive which failed to cure it and also showed up as faulty.

Eventually the thing went completely t*ts up and professional help was sought, the processor was only 18 months old but it's fine nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Outa of interest how much did they charge to fix it? (email us if you want) as it would help with a cunning plan I may have (apparently).

Try booting into safemode ( holding F8 on start up) and defragmenting the HDD whilst there you could run scanreg by doing this :- Start > Run >type scanreg > ok

Other than that I`m not sure what to do...Sorry

Liam, I'm having trouble recalling all the details, cos it was a fairly fraught and confusing couple of weeks, but basically we(that's a Royal we which actually means my son) first fitted a new hard drive cos the pc told us the old one was knackered, this didn't solve the problem so as I said we called in a guy who repairs pc's who discovered that the new hard drive was actually faulty and obviously this hadn't helped. He also reloaded all the Windows stuff and drivers etc. and for a couple of days it was ok but then started crashing again,he took it away again and discovered that the processor was faulty even though only 18 months old.

He charged us £45.00 + VAT. for re-installing the old hard drive and getting it running again.

He then fitted a new processor(he had supplied the previous one)unfortunately a slightly slower one cos apparently he couldn't get one the same to go with our motherboard, and for this there was no charge.

The first signs of having the klez virus on my machine, within a day of it being identified and before the auto-update of Norton AV had taken place, were funny happenings in the control panel window (windows 2000) and the add/remove programs window.

I am assuming you are running NAV or similar!

Morning! Not sure the specifics of crashing a computer are. If only they came with steering wheels. If you bought the computer and didn't build it, they should have supplied you with a set of cd roms that reload everything. The only problem is that when you run these disks it sets your computer back to the original factory specs. i.e. everything that you have saved and downloaded will not be there. You will also have to set up any hardware that you have added. You should still have the software?? If you have done it before it shouldn't take more than an hour maybe a little longer depending on processor speed. Check the site below that I enclosed BEFORE you run those disks. Use it only as a last resort. My advice? Talk to my wife she knows more! Now if I could just keep her out of the kitchen.. Seriously though, I have heard recently that Norton has come under fire for falsley stating it had virus definitions that it did not. Unfortunately I have nothing to confirm this. For what its worth and I hope you get it sorted out try going here. Good Luck!!

To clarify: I meant to say use the disks only as a last resort not the website.. My apologies and lets hope you didn't run those restore disks already! It takes a long time to acquire all the information only to lose it by running the restore. Once again good luck!

IPFs are a bear to track down and kernel32.dll shows up in many of them.

Take a look Here for some troubleshooting tips and links to other sites that may help.
