Bumper fruit yields

RUDD

Recommended Posts

The cherry tree outside my house, my strawberry plants and my Raspberry bush have over the last week given us a bumper crop of fruit.

So much in fact that summer fruit pies may have to be made and frozen.

Hope the pear tree does as well as I hope to make some Cider!

Is this localised as my location has its own microclimate or are crops good allover?

Well a mile up the road I'm happy to report that our small apple tree has gone crazy over the last couple of weeks and is now sagging with small apples. The blackcurrant bush is coming along very nicely too. We like to make blackcurrant schnapps in our house so hoping for a good harvest. Lot's of birds round our way though and I haven't got any netting sorted...

Contrast with a few weeks back when my OH went to the local pick your own strawberries place and they were only selling them pre-picked as they said there crop wasn't big enough for people to be picking their own. I suppose it's my fault with my 'one for the basket, one for my mouth' approach.

I've made it a few times, it's OK, but my mix of apples isn't perfect. It's a lot nicer if you add lots of honey and make it into cyser (apple mead). To rectify this, I have bought a Kingston Black cider apple tree, but it's only got two apples on it at the moment so I think it will be a few years before I get any benefit from it!

My Blackcurrants and Strawberries have done very well this year. My Gooseberries failed miserably with not one fruit being produced. My Rhubarb plants all died.

Not one Apple nor Pear anywhere is my area and Cherry trees are devoid of fruit.

Local Bee keepers in my area report a drop in Honey production of up to 65%.

My neighbors yellow Raspberry plants have produced a bumper crop and the canes are bowed by the volume.

Does no one over there grow tomatoes or spinach or other mundane crops?

We grow both Newt, broccoli, kale, peas and runner beans too. Several herbs Rarely post about 'em. We just pick, cook and eat 'em. Some years we have a surplus and preserve them also.

Have only just finished the enormous stock of green tomato chutney (Mrs Beeton's recipe) we produced in 2011
