Tips for Wingham

I will be taking about 3kilo of vitalin, 4-5 pints of maggots, a couple of bags of frozen corn, maybe a few pints of hemp and about half a kilo of worms. Not sure if to put some pellets in yet, will have to see how much room we have in the car. Think my mate might be taking his mondeo now so we can get even more kit in.

Effort equals reward!!

Looks like we are all going for the corm, maggot and worm approach. Has any one tried fishing pellets at Wingham before ?

I was looking through my pellet mountain in the shed today and am not sure if I should take some with me. Think I have got a bit carried away in the last few months with buying pellets.

Have Bloodworm, CSL, Halibut, Meat, Squid and Belachim, Trout, Swim Stim, Hemp, Crab.

I have caught Bream before on Halibut when targeting Carp, so they should work when targeting Bream ! Best bet may be to mix them all up in a small bucket so I have a variety of break down times and a few different choices of hook bait.

Looks like most of my weekend will be spent walking between the car and my swim carrying kit and bait :)

As I pack all my kit for Wingham I have been reminiscing, as a kid I used to walk to my fishing destination with a 10ft Carlton rod from Argos and a little tin with a few lead shot and hooks and half a pint of maggots and always seemed to catch something, Roach, Perch, Dace and Gudgeon.

Now I plan a trip like Wingham like a military campagn and struggle to fit all my gear in my mates estate car.

These days a fishing trip for me involves Tonnes of bait, different rods and reels for each species, alarms, rod pod, Bivvy, carp net & standard net, Unhookig mat, Chair, Camp Bed, Stove, PVA bags, basically everything but the kitchen sink.

Jedibond I think you need to buy a bigger car, or I need to learn to drive :)

2 years ago me and my mate went to wingham, we had everything except worm. not a touch, ,the fish are not heavliy fished after, they are still very weary of new baits. To be honest i think the way to tackle wingham as steve said was keep it simple.

BTW that was just my experiance but ill see you there on sat

You should all have just received an e-mail from me with rules and directions. If you haven't please contact me via e-mail (NOT via PM or by leaving a message here).

Apologies for not answering all questions on AN or via e-mail but I'm completely whacked having been working long hours at Wingham the last few days. I'm off again there tomorrow morning but will try to reply before I go.

Firstly, thanks for the link Paul.

To answer all your questions (please remind me if I've missed one):

Backleads could be helpful, especially for the bream for the reason Anthony gave. However, if fishing for perch with them make sure that they're heavy. The same applies to any running lead. This is to ensure that it doesn't move, but rather your indicator does instead. This will minimise resistance, that perch hate. I'd suggest a running ledger for perch with a minimum of 1½ozs for the lead.

Mind you, many of the perch will never have seen a bait so they won't be especially shy. For the same reason the fish won't have seen exotic baits, so these may not be so useful. What has worked so far is worm, maggot and caster, plus corn and boilies for the tench and bream etc. Hemp has also be used successfully, especially for the tench - and they also love cereal groundbait. However, I'd be interested to see how well baits such as pellets and luncheon meat do.

Perch often feed up in the water, especially when the light is poor. So float fishing is a useful option, as is a sunken float paternoster.

Turning to hooks, I've been using Kamasan Aberdeens in size 6. These have microbarbs, and are fine in the wire and so relatively light in weight. They're especially good for lobworm or lob/corn cocktails. If you use smaller hooks with lobs you're likely to miss bites - and they may be at a premium at Wingham! But any that you get could result in a monster, even a record.....

With small baits like maggots you can use barbless in size 10 and smaller as these are unlikely to harm the perch.

By the way, the perch fight like tigers, so don't fish too fine a line. Fred Guttfield thought at first that the 3lber he caught at the weekend was a carp!

I never really trust the weather reports until at least a day or so I am going anywhere as they change so much. I looked yesterday and it said showers for the Sunday and today it say's no showers all weekend. I will wait until Friday and have a look then, either way I don't care but it would be nice for it to be a pleasant weekend.
