Better still, enhance the beard with a deerstalker hat, and people come up and ask questions such as "what bird is that?" "what bait is best for houting" and similar pearls of wisdom

Deerstalkers, like beards, save time - imagine how much time and mental energy is wasted by baseball-cap wearers wondering whether to have the peak facing to front or to rear.:headhurt:

I don't have a Deerstalker, but I have plenty of other hats, I wear a Tilley in hot sunny weather, it's quite surprising how many more people will talk to me when I'm wearing it compared to when not wearing it, or wearing a different hat. (Almost makes unsociable me want to get rid). -_-

Same as for trout or charr, but you need to be fishing in Baltic rivers/estuaries to stand a chance.

There used to be some in the Medway, the Adur and the Colne, but before my time.

I wear a breton fishermans cap

OK for cycling in (a dark blue would go well with that fluorescent orange cape)

OK for social occasions, such as garden parties, your daughter's wedding or going down the pub (etiquette demands it is kept on in the pub, in the church, or indoors generally - if the old joke about the colour of a baby's hair has any substance, some even wear them in bed)

However, on the water, the only person entitled to wear a Breton Fisherman's Cap is a Breton Fisherman.

From Vagabond's "Sailing Etiquette"

Do not wear a peaked cap if your vessel is an 8' dinghy

Do not wear a peaked cap if your vessel is a 60' luxury cruiser
