Ideal roach fishing rod

I'm looking for some advice on rods for roach fishing, as I can see me doing a lot more of it over the next few years. Here's what I want it for:

- rivers, mainly the upper/middle Thames, probably also some occasional use on the tributaries

- legering, most often a balanced feeder (upstream legering style), sometimes downstream legering too

- fishing specifically for roach which (dare I dream?) might go above 2lb, although realistically aiming for 1lb+ fish

I'm not concerned about accidentally hooking bigger fish (chub, bream, etc.), it might happen but I don't want to beef anything up just in case it does.

At the moment I use an old 10ft Silstar powerwind matchpicker bomb rod, which is very delicate and soft. Ideal for light lines and soft mouths. But with a decent flow it does sometimes feel a bit undergunned, once the feeder has settled the soft tips take on quite an impressive curve...

Maybe that's not much of an issue, but I always read you should use carbon tips for this type of fishing.

Anyway, any advice appreciated :)

EDIT I am looking forward to winter and more of these

I still use an old Diawa quiver for my lightish legering Andrew, but a question on here had me look at the

Shakespeare mach2 wand. All the reviews seem to be good, and it looks like it could be an option for what you need.

It's cheap as well.

Your choice of rod really does depend on the power and depth of the flow. I wouldn't bother about hook pulls as imo people go on about hook pulls with roach far to much and i've never had problems with it happening except when I was very very young and struck far to hard.

I think i'd take a look at the shimano techniums...

I have one of these (I know you like your white tips) and it is perfect for roach but it depends on the flow...

Thanks John, I'll look that one up.

I should also say that I have Avon/quiver rods of 1.25lb tc with a selection of tips, and these are too heavy/powerful for this type of fishing.I need something that will handle lines down to 2lb and not create hook pulls, but that shows the bites well.

Cheers Tigger - depths are between 6-12ft, and the flow can vary hugely, depending on the weather - but an ideal pace is a slow walking pace. If it's raging through, I'd search out the slacks.

It does depend on what your thinkin' of paying also (regarding the rod). If you look at the drennan rods on evilbay you'll see some ideal drennan feeder rods for roach fishing. I like the older light and medium feeders. Those shimano technium specialist feeders are spot on though to be honest and the tips are nice long white ones :).

I don't mind paying a bit of money, also I'm just as happy getting an old rod from ebay as a new rod. The Shimanos sound interesting, thanks.

When trotting elderberries for roach, I found that I was bouncing off too many fish using my usual trotting rods, and not setting the hook on fast bites.

I looked around and found a brand new Preston Innovations 13ft on ebay won for not a lot of money.

Beautiful crisp action for fast striking and soft enough to use very fine hooklengths for the suspicious larger roach and forgiving when playing larger roach in the fast current.

They also do light feeder rods.
