Some drive copy software does that. I know partition magic used to...but it's not free.

Seriously though...transferring your data will be easy as drag and drop to replace like for like.

In all honesty your current install sounds so bugged out a clean install is probably best....seriously might be worth waiting for 8.1 in early October though....although given a clean install it prob wont make a huge difference.

Worth copying the user files then dragging them back after install?

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

no; just drop out your old hdd...install to new one...when your fully back up and running with an anti virus as well; plug your old drive in as secondary and drag n drop files back to their new location from your old drive.

for reference i would avoid copying the "appdata" folder in your user account...its usually full of crap and the most likely place for virus stuff to lurk. the appdata folder will contain settings for emails and suchlike occasionally though..but the best way to do that is to install your mail app, then import into it from the secondary drive location.
