Kevlar rods

Just to complicate this a bit more, having a look around the web I came across this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-DAIWA-WHISKER-KEVLAR-BORON-KBX-90-RODS-/300877891027?nma=true&si=38GfrrU3p5yQpnfBD7od4MZGR4s%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Salmon rods from the 90s that are carbon plus kevlar PLUS boron!

If I remember right boron, like carbon, was first used for fly rods, and then seas rods, before coarse rods were produced.

Here's a US company that still makes them, it shows a cross section of how the carbon fibre, (graphite to them), is bonded with the boron. It also gives a chart to compare compression strength, and modulus.

Pretty pricey at £500 to £600 each.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Good advertising but I wonder what it means in real terms. Does it make any real difference in use or is it designed to catch more anglers than fish?

Maybe it is just included to justify the price. I think that proper design of the rod to include proper tapers contributes more to a rod's action and useability than fancy "space age" additions.

I have some very nice rods made out of grass and glass.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

And the anglers who uses these rods are carbon based life forms and I don't mean a Swedish ambient music duo.

And don't bring carrots into this either !!

Smile they said life could get worse, I did and it was

Its not the varnish Steve.Very few modern blanks are varnished/laquered/hi-builded. Its just the resin itself that is used to bond the fibres together and then built up, Think of it more like a gelcoat finnish on fibreglass products.

Good point, Budgie, it's not really varnish - but certainly the thickness and appearance of the layer of resin over the fibres does appear to vary between rods.

This link might be of interest Andrew.

It isn't about kevlar itself, but more about how, where, and when different types of fibre are used to make a rod, depending on the action required.

Ok, it's from Harrison, and promotes their gear, but I found it interesting.

I hate to admit it, but the thing that first made me want one of the fox barbel rods was the way it looked...! Soooo pretty.
