Striped bass

Edit: While I usually agree with you John, Hybrid bass are not in the same league as carp or sturgeon or catfish.

They would be much more analogous to rainbow trout. They can be socked and caught. A few might escape in floods but where they do, they will not be able to breed.

They would still compete with, and prey on, the indigenous species Ken. How long before they would be seen as the 'in' fish, and with a profit in mind, stocked in more and more waters.

Carp will only breed when the conditions are right, but they still get spread about the country, with less thought than a farmer does with manure.

I can't understand this idea of stocking species, just because some fancy fishing for them. It's a practise that rarely ends well, either for the stocked species, or more often for the indigenous flora and fauna.

As for the carp fry thing from phone. That's one of the good things I witnessed with carp, when I've watched them in a local pond, hoovering up their own fry.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

If you catch one, you can't release it, unless you have an ILFA licence (which is unlikely to be issued).

The EU is on the case!

http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-13-769_en.htm

Is new legislation necessary? Can't existing EU laws be extended to cover IAS?

A thorough assessment of existing legislation revealed that only a small number of invasive alien species are addressed by existing legislation, leaving considerable gaps.

.......There are also EU rules on the use of alien species in aquaculture, regulating the release of alien species used in aquaculture, but they leave other species, e.g. those used for sport fishing, unaddressed.......

Yes. It always suprised me that none have made it over here given the ease with which large carp and catfish seem to make the trip.
