https as newt says is a secure encrypted connection between you and the website. Not all websites have httpS and ones that have it like facebook which do have it will sometimes display content that is linked on another website and may not be encrypted and or turning off https all together because of the external content.

Ah-haa

 

Problem solved. The 2WIRE DOO-HICKEY was on it's last leg. Received a new on via Fed-X and everything seems hunky-doory.
