As well as at the odd angling event, I've bumped into Angling Trust ambassador Charles Jardine several times on a local trout water.

Once with a party from a local school. Another time he was exploring the margins with a tadpole fly, whooping with delight and enthusing at the power of the trout he hooked in to.

On another occasion, he put down his rod for a while to give another angler a free lesson in fly-casting (an experienced fly-fisherman that belongs to the same syndicate as me). Ken was stunned by the experienced (and now casts a whole lot better!)

(I was only slightly jealous and secretly flattered that Chares hadn't felt that my casting needed sorting).

His joy at fishing, and helping others into fishing, passing on skills, knowledge and enthusiasm is inspirational.

Geoffrey bucknal gave me a few lessons ,first in his garden mastering the wrist action and then he took me to a pond where he gave a couple more with a full length of line

I wish i had kept the old rod and line he also gave me but being about 10 didnt appreciate who he was or what the tackle was then.

I have never cast a fly since ,not that he spoilt anything or had no effect on me just that it was a rich mans sport at the time ,us commoners paid very little or nothing to fish and the now widespread use of the fly to catch almost all species i presume scarce bar the obvias accidental fish taken

Being a nieve kid i didnt know him as bucknall the man or bucknall the author he was just a neighbour

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

OFF TOPIC

Is David Profumo the son or grandson of John Profumo that I remember from the late 50's - early 60's. The guy that had an affair with a beauty (maybe she was a commie or something(?) )that changed the UK government.

Odd how that name jumped off the page at me.

I believe he is the son. John Profumo had an affair with Christine Keeler, not a " commie" to my knowledge. Nor a pinko either.

Incidentally, I don't like David Profumo's fishing writing.
