Anyone ever tried a microphone on MSN Messenger? If so, is it any good? What sort of mic should I go for, etc.?

Cheers,

Elton

I agree with Simon I've tried both and the feedback is horrendous. Go for the headphones or you will have to place the speakers as far away from the mike as possible. Which isn't very far. There is a delay and an echo. Sometimes it takes a while to catch up. Messenger also has a feature that allows you to use a camera. Pretty close to real time too.

I've used it to talk to family in the US which saves on cost. My wife and I used it when I was in the AF and she was here in England. Haven't used it in a while though.

I use a "cheapy" mike stuck on the side of the pc and it is fine if you do not turn the volume up to high. This is for speech only.

I also use MSN for video links and that uses the mike built in to the camera. This is stuck on the top of the monitor so I am face to face with whoever I am talking to.

Yahoo messenger is also good for video, but I have not tried sound on its own.

I would go for the video camera and then you won't have to buy one later on!

From personal experience the Logitech Pro 4000 is brilliant.

i use the creative mike that came with the soundcard but listen through the headphones , i use my fuji camera as a webcam and its "ok" unfortunatly with a 56k modems both ends the lag is so great with the video side (even on poor graphics for faster receipt)

i can almost go to the loo in the time it refreshes it may be the camera as it has no tweaks in the messenger software but even so very poor :(

there is a tuning bit in messenger to get the best from the mike but i still had to turn it to 3/4 + 20Db boost in the creative controls to get it to be heard at the other end :)

playing with the audigy EAX controlls allows you to change your voice from chipmunk to zeus unfortunatly the person on the other end cannot fathom out the howls of laughter coming out at his end as only you can hear the difference as it doesnt transfer down the line to him only you which tends to spoil the fun :(:D

I have to use MSN Messenegr at work all day long to keep in touch with the idiots in our London office.

The microphone facility is pretty good, and a bog standard microphone will do.

Cheers, guys. Some interesting comments.

I think I'll give it a go. I use MSN for work, but the idea of being able to speak to my mum in Australia is nice.

Cheers again,

Elton

Hi Elton - My other half talks to a relative in Boston, U.S on yahoo messenger just using a cheap mic stuck on the side of pc and using some fairly standard speakers and it works fairly well even on 56k at both ends.

Hi Elton, I use a wee logitech mike to speak to my Aunt and Uncle in California, On Yahoo tho, only on a dial up and havent had any problems to speak of. We also use the web cam at the same time, no problems there either. Best of luck. :D
