Had several holidays on the broads as a nipper. Both on boats and in riverside lodges with their own boats to head out in.

Have to say you quickly learn to avoid casting out far or nit moving your line/rod for passing boats in my experience.

I recall my brother getting his rod nearly pulled in and his retaliation being a hefty barrage of catapulted maggots onto the offending cruiser though! Lol!

In an ideal world boats would move central to the river to avoid anglers....out of common courtesy and thoughtfulness. In practice though it's probably easier for a fisherman to reel in, sink line, or just fish closer in than it is for a cruiser to spot a fisherman, notice rods or line and swerve to avoid possible mishaps.

Is the roach fishing better in winter down there John? From what i could tell in the week i was there in August the stamp of roach seemed better up river (Wroxham and above).

You are correct generally and from now on wroxham is a hotspot for bigger roach. The shoals have been slow to return to their winter haunts this year. I believe we are still that month behind from the cold spring. There is real concern over high floods yesterday and today with the winds from north. A salt surge could well have pushed in. With the fish still well spread it could be a problem.

There are a lot of quality roach throughout the broads but so many small ones it can make finding them harder. St Bennets is a hotspot with many 1lb plus fish being caught in matches. If I was to go after then now it would be wroxham or beyond Potter Heigham .

I caught a couple of boats as kid at the river Wissey in Norfolk, and quickly learned that there's only one winner when it happens. Reeling in and recasting is annoying sometimes, but not as annoying as hooking a boat...

Heavy boat traffic is one reason I don't fish the Thames much in the summer. It should be quietening right down now though, soon be time to searching for those roach :)

OK, so I guess I should clarify a few things. I was fishing along the moorings, not hidden in the reeds. So my rods were easily visable, as were we all. the reference to 'giving way' relates to boats coming in to moor & not passing, many think it is meant for both. I was about 50yds along the bank, oppersite the entrance to South Walsham dyke, so there was plenrty of room to move in.

Can't remember how to load pics so here's the link to my photo bucket page. First 5 pics are S.B.A. Others are Postwick on the Yare.

Its a good wide river there, but I don't think having the entrance to a dyke opposite means there is more room. Boats coming down river may be aware of the dyke and keep well out in the river just in case another boat appears from it. Which may in turn push the boats coming up river much closer to you.How far out where you fishing?

Not all boaters have a clue about fishing or how far your lines my go. Some may never even have used a boat before.

All,

Explain to me the "frequency" of this happening. I've caught a few boats in my time - maybe 3 as I don't float fish. Is that when it happens - float fishing? No big deal over here execpt it is something we all like to biytch about.

Story (no groans please) - 30 - 35 yrs ago I caught a 7 man scull during a Big 12 University rowing match. Although the boat truned nearly 90 degrees (20 lb line) I didn't get caught and never let out a peep. Still feel sorry for those kids and would probably handle it differently today.

We have TONNES more boats, with 1/3 being operated by non-anglers, but of course, much larger waters I guess.

The "tone" of this thread does not compute.

When climbing Mt Kenya, you pass through a bamboo belt, the home of forest buffalo. Normally if you ignore them, they ignore you - but a dangerous beast if you upset them.

There is a notice by the track "Give way to buffalo"

Humorous or serious ?

Well, we laughed, but took it seriously when a small herd wanted to cross.
