Soon be time for roach

The temperatures are dropping, there's flow and colour in the rivers, the leaves are falling... looking forward to sitting by the river with some quivertipped flake out in the flow, hoping for big, silver roach :)

2lber this year? Maybe...?

Good luck with it Dales. I think the river roach fishing is going to be my main focus this winter. I think it's now down to just going as much as possible and hoping certain paths cross! With luck this first big flush through will concentrate them in what appears to be one of their winter areas on the Thames, and hopefully they'll stay there (or thereabouts) for the rest of the winter.

There are also a couple of tributaries that have good potential, which we scoped out earlier in the year. I reckon those little rivers might throw up a surprise or two - anything over a pound would be fantastic.

Being brave or daft, take your pick, I'm hoping to try for a Thames roach tomorrow. The river has peaked early this morning and should be fishable by tomorrow; with the colour who knows what might turn up.

Locally, September was a fantastic month for good roach, my best was 1-14 on the upper Stour on casters, a 1-12 on Throop on tares plus others over a pound on tares and bread. From what I've garnered the Thames also fished well on hemp and tares through September into October with good bags and some good individual fish.

Good luck in your quest for a 2lber; they exist and only by fishing for them can the dream come true. I'll be happy with a Thames 1-8 this season.

Good luck Mark, your timing is perfect I reckon, the river should be pretty much spot on for the first time this year!

I'm not really on a quest for a 2 to be honest, but I am hoping for fish over 1.08. I've managed that for the past 2 seasons so fingers crossed. But I do now believe that 2s exist, which does add to the electricity of each bite :)

You lucky sods, just been looking at my local river levels, and they look ideal for roach. All the major local rivers look at, or just above, normal levels.

I won't be able to get off any time soon, so good luck lads on some 'proper' fishing. Let us know how you get on.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I'm curious why people seem to think cold/freezing temp's bring roach on the feed. In my experience it does just the opposite. Only thing the colder times does to help catch them is cause them to shoal up tighter and it knocks the weed back.

Personally i'd much prefer to fish for them or ewt else for that matter in warm pleasant conditions :).

I don't know whether it's a similar thing like Pike fishing where experiences in the north differ from the south of the country. From my experience of Roach is that the bigger ones seem to feed more actively during the Winter, Plus also there is the fact that those who may fish for Carp, Bream or Tench during the rest of the year switch to Roach as they are a very viable winter species.
