Windows Service Pack 3

Peterpike and Cory, I can't find a file named "setupal.log", but there is one named "setup.log" . This seems to list all the original settings when the PC was new (1956)

I have spent some time checking but can't find any with "Access denied"

I have a feeling I am looking in the wrong place :)

And how do I search this log?

Den

"When through the woods and forest glades I wanderAnd hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,And hear the brook, and feel the breeze;and see the waves crash on the shore,Then sings my soul..................

Den it would be easier for you to do as cory said click link on original answer and try method 1

it is quite complicated to edit the reg files

in hindsight not for the beginner no offence meant

here the link XP SP3

Peter, no offence taken :) The download has already been done via automatic updates (I allow MS to update whenever it wants to). About every 3 days I am prompted to install this update, each time it fails at the same point. I have tried downloading again but I am informed that the files are already D/Loaded and ready to install.

den this is a stand alone download so you shouldn't experience the problem that many did using the win update

this actually download the program then you install it mate Failing That then try method 3

good luck

  • 2 weeks later...

I filmed the install process tonight and it stopped at this file.. FXSAPI.DLL

I have searched and found there are 3 files on my PC with that title. Two of them dated 04/08/2004 both 442KB, and one dated 14/4/2008 441KB. The first two are Application extensions and the third came as an auto update I assume.

They are apparently drivers for FAX..( I have never used FAX )

I googled it and found a few comments re problems installing SP2. I have installed SP2 with no trouble, some time ago.

I have also Googled "file No FXSAPI.DLL and windows service pack 3" but I can't figure out what advice is being given ( if any)

Any ideas as to what to do next?

Mine continually failed at the same point and to make things worse, it then seemed to take forever to uninstall itself. I was advised to download the iso file that you can burn to a cd and use that method instead. The thing now is that after starting up the cd and seeing what is on it, I really can't see any reason whatsoever for doing it.

I'll just tag this along as well, just to see if anybody has any ideas. XP MCE won''t work because it says I don't have a TV card, yet Device Manager says it is working perfectly. Apparently I need something called Net Framework, but how do I get it?

After a great deal of Googling I have solved the problem. When I checked via Control Panel | Add/Remove programs, Net Framework 1.1 SP1 seemed to be already installed, but it required a registry hack to make it work.

Go to the Start menu, choose Run and type cmd

From the cmd prompt, type %windir%\ehome\medctrro.exe /o /p RunOnce then Enter

You will have to type the sequence in bold manually, because cut and paste doesn't work in that dialog.

I don't know what it does but it works.

I found all this from the following source:

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/200.../18/482472.aspx

I hope this helps somebody else in the same situation.
